During an episode of Glennon Doyle’s, “We Can Do Hard Things” podcast, Grammy Award-winning artist Kelly Clarkson opened up about the dissolution of her nearly seven-year marriage.

She shared that she was initially reluctant to end things with Brandon Blackstock, as she held onto the belief that she could mend their fractured relationship on her own.

The “Stronger” singer revealed to Doyle, “I’m like, ‘I can do this.’ My ego is like, ‘I can control my actions. I can control my reactions,’” she added, “It becomes a little bit of your ego that gets in the way.”

The reason for the split, as cited by Clarkson, was “irreconcilable differences.” The former couple continues to share joint custody of their children, daughter River Rose, 9, and son Remy, 7.

Clarkson, who experienced her own parents’ divorce, expressed her and Blackstock’s shared determination to shield their children from the same experience.

“We don’t want to do what we saw done,” she emphasized. “I’m like, ‘I don’t want my kids to be those kids at school.’”

The therapist shared a valuable insight with the “Stronger” composer, stating, “It’s OK for your kids to see you struggling. That’s life.”

Reflecting on her romantic history, Clarkson revealed that her relationship with Blackstock was her sole significant romance.

She explained, “I was essentially single until around the age of 30… I mean, in terms of genuine relationships, he was the only one. I’ve become quite adept at embracing a solitary life.”

Now embracing her newfound single status, Clarkson finds it incredibly liberating, describing it as “freeing.” She appreciates the solace of being alone, fully immersing herself in her own world and embracing the bliss that comes with it.

Clarkson said, “The thing about divorce, especially having it publicized”, she added, “The hardest part of that is, it wasn’t an overnight decision.”
