Surprisingly, the most overlooked symptom of OSA is snoring, often dismissed as a minor annoyance. Dr. Behar stressed that addressing OSA could involve simple lifestyle changes, such as weight loss, sleeping on one’s side, and avoiding alcohol and sleeping pills. For more severe cases, continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machines are considered the most effective treatment.

Dr. Behar also highlighted the broader concern of inadequate sleep, citing recommendations by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for adults to aim for seven to nine hours of sleep nightly. Alarming statistics reveal that nearly half of American adults suffer from sleep deprivation due to various modern lifestyle factors, including long work hours, excessive use of electronic devices, poor diet, caffeine and alcohol consumption, physical inactivity, and heightened stress levels.

Recent research has even unveiled the concept of “beauty sleep,” where maintaining a consistent sleep schedule can slow down the biological aging process. Individuals with irregular sleep patterns were found to have a biological age nine months older than those with consistent schedules.

Dr. Behar delivered a resounding message, emphasizing the critical role of sleep in overall well-being. He urged people to treat sleep with the same seriousness as proper nutrition and exercise, given its profound impact on health, both physically and mentally.
