Dakota Johnson, known for her role in “Fifty Shades of Grey” and her candid discussions about battling depression, recently shared how her boyfriend, Chris Martin of Coldplay, played a crucial role in helping her through a challenging day.

The actress spoke about this during the 17th annual luncheon of the Hope for Depression Research Foundation (HDRF).

Johnson recounted a recent low day, stating, “A few weeks ago, I was having a low day. And my partner said to me, ‘Are you really struggling?’ and I said, ‘No?’” Despite her attempt to downplay her feelings, Martin sensed something was amiss.

“He said, ‘Baby, you are wearing a cat T-shirt.’ As in ‘Cats’ the music,” Johnson explained. “So, it turns out, I really was struggling. But that moment lifted me up and pulled me out of it.”

Dakota Johnson Depression and Anxiety Journey

The actress was honored with the HOPE Award for Depression Advocacy during the event, recognizing her openness about living with depression and anxiety.

In her acceptance speech, Johnson emphasized the importance of destigmatizing mental health issues. “Removing the stigma of anxiety and depressive disorders and the means to help them is essential,” she said.

Johnson highlighted the need for mutual support in understanding and addressing mental health challenges, especially given the complexities of brain chemistry and life experiences.

“We are in too much trouble as a human race to feel further isolated by the brain chemistry and complexities of the mind that we are born with, or the life experiences that we may not have chosen given the state of the world,” Johnson stated.

“If we help each other understand that caring for our mental health is essential, perhaps that will turn practicing self-love and self-compassion into a vital part of living.”

Dakota Johnson and Chris Martin were first linked romantically in October 2017, following a sighting at a sushi restaurant, according to People magazine. The couple’s relationship has been marked by moments of public acknowledgment, with Martin dedicating the Coldplay song “My Universe” to Johnson during a London concert in October 2021.

The actress’s journey with depression and anxiety has been a focal point of her advocacy efforts, and her recent recognition by the HDRF reflects her commitment to raising awareness and promoting understanding surrounding mental health challenges.

As Johnson continues to navigate her own experiences with mental health, her partnership with Chris Martin stands as a testament to the supportive role relationships can play in overcoming such struggles.

Their story underscores the importance of empathy, communication, and understanding within relationships, especially when dealing with mental health issues.

In a world where the conversation around mental health is gaining momentum, Dakota Johnson’s openness serves as an inspiration, encouraging others to share their stories and seek support.

The HOPE Award for Depression Advocacy is a fitting acknowledgment of Johnson’s impactful advocacy work, amplifying the message that compassion and empathy can make a significant difference in the lives of those facing mental health challenges.
