Can You Spend A Lifetime Alongside Someone In This Way

Can you spend a lifetime alongside someone in this way?  Not quite with them or a part of their life directly, but always being close. Waiting in the wings like an understudy, always playing the minor role instead of the lead you felt destined to play. Stealing glances of another’s life through doors left ajar you know will never open for you.  It’s like living between breaths, speaking only in the gaps between words, or living between two adjacent worlds.  One where we each go home to separate houses and the other where we call each other home.
