Is Manspecting A New Mansplaining? 

The committee, previously run by dedicated and hardworking women, welcomed a man at the helm. 

Brimming with fresh ideas and corporate experience, he initially impressed the committee members with his dynamism and innovative approach. 

However, as time passed, his commitment began to waver, leading to frustration and disappointment among the women. 

This phenomenon has been aptly coined as “manspecting,” a concept that sheds light on the unfulfilled promises of men who underestimate the workload and fail to execute their responsibilities.

The man in question had every intention of fulfilling his role when he first joined the committee. However, he underestimated the magnitude of the task and lacked a solid execution plan. 

As work piled up, he became increasingly elusive, ignoring emails and arriving late to Zoom calls. 

Finally, citing the overwhelming workload at his law firm, he withdrew from the committee altogether, leaving the dedicated women to pick up the slack. It raised a pressing question: how did he go from being enthusiastic to a complete no-show?

Eve Rodsky, author of the groundbreaking book “Fair Play: A Game-Changing Solution for When You Have Too Much to Do (And More Life to Live),” sheds light on the underlying issue.

Women, regardless of their employment status, bear the brunt of two-thirds of childcare and housework

This persistently skewed division of labor remains unchanged, despite the increasing number of women becoming breadwinners, according to a recent Pew Research Center study. 

However, Rodsky emphasizes that the recognition of this imbalance by men during the pandemic is a positive step forward. 

It is crucial for men to not only acknowledge the workload but also take action to share it equitably.

The problem arises when good intentions remain mere words without any follow-through. Many women can relate to the frustration of being promised assistance, only to be let down when it matters the most. 

One anonymous friend shares her exasperation, recounting her husband’s repeated failures to fulfill his commitments. Even with explicitly defined responsibilities, such as giving their child a daily multivitamin, he often falls short. 

The constant reminders and broken promises lead to a cycle of nagging and an increasing feeling of being taken for granted.

On the flip side, some men argue that maternal gatekeeping and unrealistic expectations can contribute to their perceived failures. Men who offer to take on tasks may face arbitrary deadlines or specific requirements, making success elusive. 

For instance, if a husband volunteers to research and enroll their child in an afterschool soccer program, his understanding of the timeline might differ from his partner’s. 

This discrepancy can lead to missed opportunities and frustration on both sides. Finding a balance between letting go of control and providing clear expectations is crucial in avoiding disappointment. 

Rodsky suggests that establishing boundaries, implementing systems, and fostering open communication are essential steps in resolving this issue within marriages

Clear alignment on responsibilities, timelines, and communication methods can help couples navigate the distribution of mental and emotional labor effectively. 

By working together and ensuring everyone is on the same page, couples can avoid misunderstandings and reduce the burden on one partner.

While solutions can be found within marriages, the phenomenon of manspecting remains prevalent in various aspects of life. 

Until men truly embrace the responsibility of executing tasks rather than merely considering them, women will continue to come to the rescue, one bake sale brownie at a time.
