Eyewitness News has confirmed that rapper Big Pokey died in Beaumont, Texas, according to Justice of The Peace Tom Gillam III.

The talented rapper, whose real name was Milton Powell, is known for his hit track “The Sensei,” reportedly collapsed at a local bar in Beaumont after his performance on Saturday. Although shrouded in mystery, the exact cause of his untimely demise remains unclear.

Pour09 Bar & Rooftop, the venue where the rapper was scheduled to perform as a special guest during a Juneteenth celebration, shared the news on social media.

The establishment regularly hosts significant events and had authorities present on-site when they received a call about an “unconscious person,” as reported by Haley Morrow, the public information officer of the Beaumont Police Department.

Approximately ten minutes later, additional units were requested by the officers to assist with crowd control, as a large group of people had gathered at the scene.

On Sunday morning, Pour09 posted an update on Facebook, saying “Prayers to Big Pokey and his family,” 

They shared. “Out of respect for those involved, we will not be commenting on the incident to allow his family and friends ample time to mourn and make a statement when they are ready.โ€

Powell delivered his final performance prior to his time in Beaumont, in front of his lovely fans on Saturday night at Bicentennial Park in Baytown.

ABC13 had a conversation with Kendra Ouzenne, a devoted fan who attended the Baytown show.

“Poke was one of the influential people of that soundโ€, Ouzenne said, she also expressed how rapper Big Pokey dies and it is such a sad and hard loss for the Houston community and music overall.

Making the announcement about the Houston rapper Big Pokeyโ€™s death, fellow Houston rapper Bun B posted on Instagram saying, “I wasn’t ready for this. One of the most naturally talented artists in the city.โ€

He added, โ€œOne of the pillars of our city. If heart of gold was a personโ€ฆ There will never be another, and will be missed dearly. We love and honor you, Sensei. Rest in heaven.”

Slim Thug, another Houston rap legend, posted on social media saying that it’s a “sad day in the city” and said he is sending “prayers to his family.”

In 1999, Big Pokey introduced his debut studio album, “Hardest Pit in the Litter,” marking his entry into the music scene.

As part of the renowned Screwed Up Click collective, he collaborated and recorded alongside influential local musicians such as DJ Screw, Fat Pat, Z-Ro, Lil’ Keke, and Lil’ Flip.

Pokey continued to impress with subsequent releases like “Da Sky’s Da Limit” and “Sensei,” showcasing his growth and versatility.

Notably, he joined forces with Paul Wall on the 2005 hit single, “Sittin Sidewayz,” which not only charted on the Billboard Hot 100 but also resurfaced in 2022 when featured on Megan Thee Stallion’s “Southside Royalty Freestyle,” further cementing his impact on Houston’s music scene.
