Our Purpose Is To Pioneer!

We all know who the movers and the shakers of this world are…and were.  Their sole purpose, it seems, is and was to show us the way – to turn the light on, and to leave humanity with something lasting and true. Pioneers, generally, are people do, see, and think about things differently. With words, actions and experiences, they chart their own course. Talent is something a person is born with, for sure, but brilliance and legacy can be things people create. Well-known innovators, artists, politicians, writers, poets, personalities, scientists, photographers, philosophers, musicians, architects, builders, educators, and designers (too many to name!) are usually people who haven’t compromised their creativity. Instead they forged ahead to discover, uncover, and hone their unique view of the world. What do true pioneers have in common besides energy, the will to succeed, momentum, and a deep desire to express themselves? How can we emulate the famous pioneers of today and yesterday so that we, too, can create our own lasting impression and influence, even if it’s on a much smaller scale?

While we can’t be them, we can certainly try to “do as they do” when we walk our own true path. Here is a list of what pioneers seem to have in common, and, as an added bonus, a bunch of kick-ass quotes from famous people:

1.  They know who they are and they do not make excuses

“When you examine the lives of the most influential people who have ever walked among us, you discover one thread that winds through them all. They have been aligned first with their spiritual nature and only then with their physical selves.” ~ Albert Einstein

“I have nothing to declare except my genius.” ~ Oscar Wilde (at the immigration office)

“Ain’t no man can avoid being born average, but there ain’t no man got to be common.” ~ Satchel Paige

“He that is good at making excuses is seldom good for anything else.” ~ Benjamin Franklin

“Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do. ~ Steve Jobs

2.  They take no prisoners, and they know bullsh*t when they smell it

“When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time.” ~ Maya Angelou

“Logic is in the eye of the logician.”~ Gloria Steinem

“I have never let my schooling interfere with my education.” ~ Mark Twain

3.  They waste no time, they cater to no one, and they do not take no for an answer

“A man who dares to waste one hour of time has not discovered the value of life.” ~ Charles Darwin

“I’ll sleep when I’m dead.” ~ Warren Zevon

“Success usually comes to those who are too busy to be looking for it” ~ Henry David Thoreau

“First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win.” ~ Mahatma Gandhi

“There’s many a bestseller that could have been prevented by a good teacher.” ~ Flannery O’Connor

“The question isn’t who is going to let me; it’s who is going to stop me.” ~ Ayn Rand

4.  They make plenty of mistakes – they often fail before they succeed

“You’ve got to work with your mistakes until they look intended. Understand?” ~ Raymond Carver, Cathedral

“Develop success from failures. Discouragement and failure are two of the surest stepping stones to success.” ~ Dale Carnegie

“Victory goes to the player who makes the next-to-last mistake.”~ Chessmaster Savielly Grigorievitch Tartakower

“I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.”~ Thomas Edison
