Americans Mental Health Struggles Blocking 2026 Goals, Talkspace Survey Finds

Americans mental health struggles are robbing them of their 2026 New Year’s resolutions-30% say their mental health issues are preventing them from reaching their goals. A 2,000 person Talk space commissioned study revealed that even though traditional goals (getting in shape, saving money, eating healthy) continue to dominate, 28% of Americans also feel such issues as depression, anxiety and stress are blocking their path to achieving them. This gap, and the American’s mental health struggle specific to it, is something that truly shapes peoples sense of agency in change.

The survey, administered as 2025 wrapped up, paints the portrait of a nation who starts 2026 already exhausted, almost 30% of respondents reporting that 2025 was “awful” or “painful” and another 39% calling it “just okay.” Unfortunately for news junkies, less than 15% of Americans were “very hopeful” that 2026 will be the year they feel better, m which underscores that Americans mental health woes are a bitter motivation for wishes of emotional renewal, not apathy.

As a response, Talkspace kicked off its “Own Your Now” initiative to encourage individuals to center mental health struggles of Americans in their planning, instead of simply having it as background noise. It highlights that whether its having therapy, prioritizing rest, using coping tools are not luxuries but essential tactics to bridge the gap between intention and implementation. It treats mental health as a foundation to pursuing other objectives either you‘re exhausted, anxious or numb, it‘ll be way tougher to stay consistent with a new habit.

The survey indicates that the anguish experienced by Americans is not evenly spread throughout the population. Those who are younger, parents, or feeling uncertain about their finances are experiencing more turmoil, which is consistent with survey results linking those characteristics to soaring rates of anxiety and depression. Context matters: simply advising someone to “try harder” ignores the fact that a person who is struggling may be simply dealing with too many burdens at one time. The report pushes friends and bosses to be understanding and helpful when people do not follow through on their resolution commitments:

This research also feels as though it‘s giving people permission, or at least encouragement, to begin. If facing American‘s mental health struggles is impairing your ability to exercise, save, or show up in your relationships, it is not a matter of weak willpower, but of overwhelmed nervous systems. Focusing on mental health first via therapy, shared community, setting boundaries, or simple selfcare habits can make the other goals far more manageable. The message behind “Own Your Now” is straightforward: You don‘t need to get a perfect life before you start taking care of yourself a little better right now.
