Do you believe that everything is working out for you?
Believe it or not, it is a safe assumption you can make in life.
Everything: all the pain, all the frustration, all the failures and missteps. They are all working in your favor.
Now I don’t say this to belittle your pain, or to tell you your struggles aren’t real. After all, what do I know about your struggles?
It is true that pain and suffering are real experiences, and they often do not feel as if they are working out for you.
But I don’t write this to convince you that your pain isn’t real. I know it is.
I’m just here to tell you that if you make the assumption that everything is working out for you, it will be a safe assumption.
Everything Is Working Out For You
You already know this on some level, I promise.
You’ve seen firsthand how a failure has caused you to learn and to grow stronger.
You’ve also seen firsthand how a missed opportunity often becomes a blessing in disguise.
Every negative event in your life has a silver lining, and often benefits you very highly down the road.
For example, in my early adulthood I was a waitress/server for 6 years. It was a frustrating, challenging and strenuous job for me. I endured rude customers, verbal abuse and physical strain, and for not nearly enough money.
Now this isn’t to say serving is a bad job. I know firsthand that some people are phenomenal (and quite prosperous!) servers and I always admired their ability to shine in that kind of an environment. However, though they enjoyed the work, I most certainly did not.
At the time, I considered that line of work a complete failure for me. I didn’t like it and I certainly wasn’t the best one out there doing it. I felt as if I had failed to succeed in finding fulfilling work, and for a long time I worried I would never find a career I could enjoy.
Failures Are The Seeds To Future Success.
Standing where I am today, however, I see that this “failure” was one of my biggest stepping stones in my career path.
The stress of that job was a big initial lesson for me on the importance of relaxing and going with the flow. It taught me how to respond to negativity and how to turn it around through my actions and behaviors. It taught me how to approach people and get over my fear of rejection. Most of all, it put a deep desire in my heart to reach for something that fulfilled me better.
Back in my younger years I could be accurately described as exceptionally aloof and pretty arrogant too. Today, I see that serving provided me with a much-needed boot camp for what I wanted to accomplish down the road. I know I certainly wouldn’t be as compassionate, as relaxed or as good of a listener as I am without the invaluable lessons I learned as a server. These are skills that are 100% necessary in the line of work I do now.
So today, I write this to offer you some encouraging words for moments of failure, stress or strain. You can trust that in the end this is all working out for you.
Remind yourself of this safe assumption. It’s a good one to make, and will help take the edge off in the moments you most need it. You might not know how your pain will benefit you right now, but you can trust that it will. It is inevitable.
XO, Andrea
