Mental Health Statistics Reveal the Scale of America’s Struggle—And the Need for Change

New national surveys on the mental health of Americans reveal the extent of the problem and the necessity to expand care.

Approximately 20% of adults in the US suffer from a mental illness, which translates to over 58 million people, according to the present mental health statistics, and nearly 6% have a serious mental illness that causes a major disruption in their daily life.

The statistics on mental health also show the load of the problem on the younger generation. A lot of teens aged 12, 17 who report major depression, many of them suffer from severe impairment that affects their school, friendships, and family relationships. However, the data on mental health indicate that close to 3 million teenagers regularly have suicidal thoughts, which serve as a reminder of the serious consequences of delayed or insufficient care.

Experts say that each of these mental health stats has a person behind it who is struggling with symptoms, stigma, and often a complicated system. Hence, a lot of people are still unable to get either affordable or prompt treatment. In fact, advocacy groups have been pointing out through their reports that even though awareness is rising, a large proportion of people with mental illness still do not get any care at all in a given year.

Mental health statistics are kept alive by advocates who use them to demand policy reforms such as: implementing mental health parity, and directing funds to community, based services, and also creating diverse, culturally competent workforces. Besides that, they have highlighted that mental health statistics are more than just figuresthey are an appeal to make support as usual and as easy to access as any other kind of healthcare.
