15 Ways To Care For A Highly Sensitive Person

This post helps you know how to care for a highly sensitive person. Sensitive people donโ€™t come with a logo. They are just like every other person you come across, just with hypersensitivity to external stimuli, a greater depth of cognitive processing and high emotional reactivity.

Little things? Well, they arenโ€™t so little to them.

And the sad part is, there isnโ€™t a lot that they can do about it. Itโ€™s just a trait in them. They are empaths by nature and hold the capacity of feeling every emotion too deeply. Itโ€™s an overwhelming feeling and they donโ€™t really enjoy it. They are a tough nut to crack.

Understanding a highly sensitive person is twice as laborious as understanding a normal person around you.

They donโ€™t often open up to people and even if they do, they take a lot of time to do so. It does get a little annoying for people around them to reach out to them, but I assure you, this isnโ€™t something in their control.

Maintaining relations with them is really tough because they often do not have a typical reaction to things. Donโ€™t get them wrong but they do not intend on coming forth as rude. They just feel tired of feeling a lot which is why they prefer staying by themselves.

After reading this Iโ€™m sure you can relate all of this with at least one person in your life.

Here are the things you need to keep in your mind when you have to care for a highly sensitive person in your life.

1. Donโ€™t push them a lot.

Do not pressure them to talk to you. They require their own time to open up to people. But when they do, itโ€™s an indication that you mean something to them and they consider you to be really close to you. You need to make them comfortable around you. That is the only time they will open up to you.

2.ย  They can detect your flaws.

It is a lesser-known fact that sensitive people can detect flaws in others very easily. If they are close enough to you, they can even criticize you for it openly for your betterment.

This just proves that they are comfortable enough to speak their mind in front of you. Sensitive people have very sharp eyesight which is why nothing misses their eyes.

3. Keep a check on your volume.

You need to keep a strict check on your volume when youโ€™re talking around a sensitive person. They are highly scared of violence and loud behaviours. This will only push them deep into their shells. They donโ€™t enjoy atmospheres which arenโ€™t peaceful. So be conscious of your vocal volume around them. Let the HSP handle the lighting, music and the whole atmosphere when you are together.

4. Avoid talking about conflicting topics

Highly sensitive people hate arguing about opinions especially when you are talking about politics and religions. If you talk over them, they will leave the room very quickly. Resist arguing and show some compassion toward their views.ย

5. Do not disturb when they are working.

They have a very high sense of focus when they are working. They hate when people joke or disturb them while they are trying to achieve a set goal. It breaks their concentration.

6. Allow them to decide

Never pressurize a sensitive person into doing anything. It will only backfire. Give them their own time and space and allow them to decide whether they want to indulge in a particular situation or not.

Pressuring them will only push them away from you and theyโ€™ll start hating your company. As little as you might consider the pressure to be, for them itโ€™s going to be on an altogether different scare. So donโ€™t judge for them. Donโ€™t push it too much. Thatโ€™s the best way to care for a highly sensitive person.

7. Help them be comfortable.

Thatโ€™s the best thing you can do for a sensitive person. Help them settle down with you and have a welcoming attitude. Accept their sensitive, caring selves. They love people around who they can be comfortable. It takes a huge burden of presentability off their shoulders.

8. Keep clean around them

As weird as it sounds, sensitive people sort of suffering from OCD in messy places. They hate being in places that are unclean. A clean environment is really essential for them.

9. Encourage them to be creative

To be creative is the ideal way of releasing stress. Promote a sensitive person to be creative. It will help them get rid of their pent-up mental pressure and create something beautiful out of it. Art helps in channelizing all the negative energy out of our bodies.

However, once again, do not force them into being creative. Let it come out of them naturally. Let them decide how they want to show their creativity. You can teach a person how to perform a particular art form, but you can never force someone into letting the art flow in them.

10. Be real with them.

HSPs are uber fast in detecting lies! Keep it 100% real with them and make sure you are always honest about your feelings no matter what they are. They are over-thinkers. And if you donโ€™t provide them with an answer, they will come up with one.

11. Be their advocate

Highly sensitive people cannot express their needs. If you can understand and speak up for their needs calmly, wholeheartedly and accurately, it will be a great help.ย You donโ€™t need to fight battles for them but just stay in there to dilute the situation or back them up.ย

12. Help with phone callsย

If you want to care for a highly sensitive person, handle their phone calls. Especially sensitive introverts, because they feel pressurised or stressed out handling too many phone calls. Sometimes they have may experience a panic attack. Why not speak of helping?

13. Learn their love language

Love can be expressed in various ways like gifts, vacations, surprises, flowers, intimacy, quality time, deep talks and so on. If you want to care for a highly sensitive person, you must understand their love language. You can impress them with gifts or by offering some help around the house. HSPs often feel misunderstood so they always value deep connection with the loved ones.ย

14.ย Donโ€™t be annoyed if your HSP suddenly gets quiet

Both introverts and highly sensitive people have one thing in common, and that is โ€œquiet downtimeโ€. So be cool whenever they are having alone time. Also, they may disappear for a few days sometimes just to process things and avoid overstimulation. Make sure to give them enough space so that donโ€™t disappear unannounced.ย When they are overwhelmed, just ask what makes them panic or uncomfortable and what helps them (a hug or listening to their feelings).

15. Donโ€™t plan last minute.

They hate being included in last-minute plans. Theyโ€™d rather be alone at home than being a part of a ruckus. They do not like disorganized plans. If possible let your HSP make the plans and save them from anxiety.

Hence, make sure you are completely true to them. Just keep a check on how you chose to let them know the truth.
