5 Top Ways a Clean Home Affects Health

Author :

There is something therapeutic and relaxing about a clean home. Even after a very busy and stressful day, coming home to a clean home can immediately help you unwind and de-stress.

Clutter affects your ability to move freely around your home, and it also has an effect on your ability to think clearly. Being organized also comes naturally for our bodies, which operate on strict schedules and circadian rhythms. Let’s look at some of the top ways a clean home affects our physical and mental health.

1. Reduces stress and anxiety

Clutter in the home creates stress. This is probably the reason why cleaning can serve as a relaxation method. In a 2010 study, linguistic analysis software analyzed how 60 women described their homes. The study found that those who described their homes as “cluttered” or full of “unfinished” projects showed higher levels of the stress hormone cortisol.

As we clean our homes and organize our homes, it brings decreased levels of stress and anxiety.

2. Prevents illness and respiratory conditions

Dust is a common allergen that could settle on surfaces around the home and trigger conditions like asthma or allergic rhinitis. Dust mites could also breed, feeding on dead human skin cells in beds and upholstered furniture. Vacuuming and cleaning surfaces more frequently remove these allergens and ensure better respiratory health.

Bacteria also breeds easily in damp and dirty areas like the bathroom and kitchen. It is important that kitchen surfaces like countertops, the fridge, the pantry, and cupboards are thoroughly cleaned so bacteria does not contaminate food. The bathroom needs regular deep cleaning and the tiles have to be kept clean and dry to prevent mildew and mold.

3. Gives better sense of control

Cleaning the home gives us a sense of mastery over our environment. In times of high stress, many people resort to cleaning, as it provides some semblance of control over a chaotic situation.

If you suddenly feel the urge to go on a cleaning spree when you feel stressed out, your mind and body are probably looking for a way to put order into your life. After that cleaning break, oftentimes you discover that you are able to return to your work feeling more relaxed and focused.

4. Improves one’s mood

Knowing that your house is clean can contribute to a feeling of well-being and accomplishment. It also releases the happiness hormones called endorphins to elevate your mood. You will have much better sleep knowing that you will wake up in the morning and prepare to go to work without having to clean up any messes.

5. Sharpens your focus

When you have a clean and tidy home, there are fewer things that distract you. Your concentration improves and you can focus squarely on whatever task is at hand.

There may be situations though when you may be unable to clean your home. Thankfully, maid cleaning services like are available, whether it is just a quick hourly cleaning or a full deep cleaning of your entire home.
