A recent study on the psychological benefits of getting a manicure, particularly at a salon, has shed light on the positive impact of “superficial self disclosure” during nail care sessions.

Hidden Benefits of Getting A Manicure: Surprising Health Revelation

This research, conducted by scholars from two universities in Japan and published in Frontiers in Psychology in September, has unveiled the unexpected health benefits of engaging in light conversation with nail technicians.

The study, led by Atsushi Kawakubo, an associate professor at Saitama Gakuen University in Japan, explored the emotional and mental well-being effects of manicures, specifically when clients engage in conversations during their nail care sessions.

The findings indicate that discussing hobbies, daily life, and sharing positive experiences with nail technicians contributed to increased positive emotions, relaxation, and a sense of revitalization.

The study surveyed approximately 500 women, primarily in their early 20s to late 30s, using a four-point scale to rate their emotions and attitudes during their nail care appointments.

Additionally, participants shared the extent to which they discussed various topics, including hobbies, daily life, personal obstacles, and negative personality traits, with their manicurists, using a seven-point scale.

While engaging in light self-disclosure had a positive impact on clients’ psychological well-being, the research highlighted a potential downside. Deeper discussions, particularly those involving negative personality traits and personal struggles, were associated with a negative outcome on the participants’ psychological state.

Atsushi Kawakubo, the study author, emphasized the significance of the findings, stating that salon nail care, coupled with light self-disclosure, provides individuals with a tangible way to promote their mental well-being. He underscored the importance of self-care practices and the potential benefits of sharing personal thoughts in a comfortable and relaxed setting.

However, the research has certain limitations, such as a relatively narrow sample size and reliance on self-reported data.

Nevertheless, Kawakubo hopes that the results will underscore the importance of self-care practices in a fast-paced world, highlighting that engaging in activities that enable individuals to relax, reflect, and self-disclose can be a valuable component of maintaining good mental health.
