The knocks, the voices, the unceasing torment of the unknown. Your nerves are wore thin by your everyday concerns, and by the unrelenting oppression at home. You want to get help, but are worried that either no one will believe you, or they will think you have gone insane. Have you? These things don’t really happen, do they? You rack your brain as the thoughts swirl in your head, “what do I do?”
The premise is terrifying enough, but more frightening still, this is the reality for an untold number of people throughout the world. They face the terror of living with the paranormal without an apparent answer as to how they can return to “normal” life. For most, the answer is to pack up and move, but often enough, this is a sensible, but impractical solution. Today especially, a person can sink their entire savings into a place to live. With such depth of investment, a person cannot just pick up and go.

So what other options are there? The next course of action would be to possibly find a clergy member to come into the home to rid it of any genuine paranormal issue. Before this, at least in some instances, it may take the intervention of a genuine paranormal investigation team before a clergy member will get involved. Among other things, the team will rule out any natural causes behind the activity. Some of the questions might seem a bit personal, but are scientifically necessary (you of course may decline to answer any you deem too personal). They will simultaneously examine the environmental causes that may cause apparent “supernatural” activity (loose boards, unbalanced doors, etc.). Remember: just because something is “spooky,” doesn’t mean that it’s paranormal.
If there is enough evidence, or the clergy member is so inclined, they may intervene with a blessing. In some instances sadly, the clergy member will not intervene, or will do so halfheartedly out of an ironic want of belief in the paranormal. Speaking as a religious person, this is sad both for the faith and the faithful. First off, it is an affront to the faith, because the ordained is allowing “red-tape” to block the performance of sacred duties. In other words, legalities are holding back the healing hand. This leads directly to the second point, that is the offense that is committed to the faithful. In reading the Gospel, Jesus did not let various apparent legal stipulations stop him from doing what was right. Many, if not all, of the early disciples were very much the same way, but somewhere along the line that changed. For those like myself, the victory over the adversary is cause and reward enough.
“So what should I do!” you may ask. Well, this is where YOU come in. Particularly among the faithful (Christians), you are given a dispensation, a power, over your own homes. That’s right, even the Catholic Church, with all of its regulations, acknowledges the authority a homeowner has over their own homes. After all, what makes any residence a “home” is you!
During Epiphany and other times, the homeowner is given the authority to bless their home in power. Just as in the very natural sense, you are free to permit some people to enter and tell others to… well, you know; you are able to tell spirits the same. The ability is well within your hand, you only need to exercise it. Even if the supernatural activity turns out to be natural, a blessing will do no harm to anyone, or anything, except that which is malevolent. After all, does light expel anything but darkness?
Not know what to say? Don’t worry the least bit about it! There are a plethora of resources online. Among the other, more reputable, resources to utilize in finding the right words is found at: https://www.catholicexorcism.org/ (no I’m not sponsored by them). Once again, there are other good resources, but this is one that you might make use of. Among the other points of intrigue, you can look under “prayers for laity” for various blessings, binding prayers, and more. You may also come across an article on this very topic.
At this point, some may be tempted to do a blend of Christian and other belief systems. In my personal experience, this is not considered, “best practice.” While it may seem to take hold for a time, it is a methodology that will prove ineffectual over time due to conflicts, and subsequent gaps, that are made evident over time. Perhaps, if permitted by the publisher, I can expand on this point in another article.
At any rate, let’s say that you perform the house blessing yourself and it appears to have taken affect: then what!? First off, congratulations! You’ve faithfully taken the first step, but no journey is complete from so little an action, only started. After this, you must do what I have instructed others to do so many times: keep at it! You can’t stop after one victory. Any great military commander, or person with common sense, will agree that winning a battle does not equal winning the war. Though you’ll have peace for a time after a blessing (performed by yourself or another), it will not last unless you maintain that defense/offense dynamic.
Let us speak of light and dark. In the first blessing, you take a stand and light a candle to dispel the darkness in your home. So, for a while you have light, but eventually, the candle burns out, and darkness enters back in. For this reason, you must continually relight candles to keep the darkness at bay. Maybe this doesn’t seem fair, but it’s not about fair.

In the same way, after the first blessing, you must regularly, even daily, relight a candle. This is the candle of devotion, of faithfulness. You must regularly renew the effects of the blessing to keep the darkness out of your home and your life. In my recent book collaboration, The Haunting of Beech Grove: The Story as Never Told Before,” we feature someone who has to undertake this effort in a very real way. Everyday, she maintains the light in her home by praying, and in a sense, re-blessing her home. By doing this, she was able to keep her home in a greater state of peace than ever before.
So if your home is, or is possibly afflicted, by an unwanted spirit, you may consider the power in your own hands. While the traditional route of appealing for help can be beneficial, it may not be one you are readily able to pursue. Perhaps you don’t have a paranormal team available or clergy that is unwilling or unable to properly help, or you simply want to try to take command of the situation yourself. Despite the circumstances, do not forget your power to take control of the situation and maintain control of your home.
