The Barbie Movie Effect: A Whopping 603% Jump in Baby Name Interest!

Author :

In a world where movie magic meets baby naming trends, the Barbie movie has left a glittering trail of popularity in its wake. Let’s learn more!

Grossing over a billion dollars worldwide, the film has not only enthralled audiences but also seems to be influencing the names parents are considering for their little ones.

How Is The Barbie Movie Causing A Spike In Baby Names?

According to the renowned baby naming website Nameberry, there has been a remarkable surge in searches for the name Barbie.

Since the release of the trailer for the Greta Gerwig-directed summer blockbuster in April, interest in the name has skyrocketed by an astonishing 603%. It seems that Margot Robbie’s portrayal of the iconic Barbie and Ryan Gosling’s embodiment of Ken have captured hearts and imaginations alike.

Notably, searches for “Ken” or its more formal version, “Kenneth,” have also seen a substantial increase of 293% during the same time frame. It’s as if the world is collectively saying, “Hello, Barbie and Ken!

Sophie Kihm, the editor-in-chief of Nameberry, offered insights into this fascinating trend. While Barbie and Ken may be piquing parents’ interest, Kihm cautions that this surge in curiosity may not necessarily translate into widespread usage.

In her words, “Barbie and Ken are both dated names that aren’t due to come back yet, so while there may be a slight bump from the movie, neither will be among the most popular baby names of 2023.”

Before the movie’s release, Kihm noted an intriguing tidbit: “Barbie” had already been a favored name among Amish parents, showcasing the enduring appeal of this classic name even before Hollywood’s latest tribute.

As of now, “Barbie” stands at 1,896 out of 2,000 on the list of the most popular names for 2023 on the Nameberry website, while “Kenneth” enjoys a more substantial ranking at 113 out of 2,000.

Reflecting on the history of the name, Kihm highlighted that “Barbie” first made its appearance in the top 1000 baby names in 1961, just two years after the iconic Mattel doll was introduced. However, by 1969, the name had fallen off the charts again, only to be rekindled by the recent cinematic revival.

In a world of ever-evolving baby name trends, it seems that Barbie and Ken are making a stylish comeback, albeit not yet poised to conquer the top 10.

Nevertheless, the sparkle they bring to the baby naming landscape reminds us that sometimes, even the most classic names can experience a resurgence, thanks to the magic of cinema and a touch of nostalgia.

Who knows, in eight months’ time, we might see a million more Barbies saying “hi” to the world, leaving an indelible mark on the next generation of names.
