Nowadays, everyone seems to be a woke person. Although this sounds good for the collective consciousness rising, are we truly awake? Or just dreaming to be awake? Let’s understand what is the real awakening, and what it is not!
Before we proceed, let us ask ourselves, are we ready for this? Are we truly prepared to face any truth that goes against what our ego-self has made us believe?
Are we ready to peel off all the layers of our learned behaviors, social conditioning, and false knowledge, and dive deep within ourselves, navigate our way through the labyrinth, and come face to face with our demons – our very own Minotaur?
If yes, then we are off to a good start! We’re at least ready to embark on the journey of the real awakening! So, let’s begin.

The Age of Awakening
It is a fact that many people around the world are waking up to a realization that there is more to life than a 9 to 5 job, accumulating wealth, paying taxes, paying mortgages, and getting old.
There are realities and dimensions and worlds that exist beyond our perceptions. There is so much to learn and so much to live for! There are bigger questions that one needs to have answers for! The awakening is a thirst for knowledge – a quest for the truth!
But is there only one truth? No. Can there be false knowledge? Absolutely! Especially in today’s age of information, misinformation and disinformation are a risk more severe than ever.
We have to be very careful. If we do not use discernment, we can fall down in ego-traps and self-deceptions, believe in illusions, or blindly accept someone else’s perception to be the absolute truth, while ostracising or condemning anyone who follows a path separate from us.

So, how can we tell what is true awakening? By first learning what it is not!
The Real Awakening: How To Be Truly Wake?
Here’re the signs of a spiritually awakened soul:
1. It’s Not an Upward Climb: The Onion Theory
Used by spiritual healers, psychotherapists, and life coaches, this theory resonates most with our topic. Compare your awakening journey with the process of peeling off an onion.
Yes, real awakening is not upward and onward, but inward. First you have to get to the core of your being. Find out who you truly are; what brings you real joy, shame, sadness, fulfillment, and not what society has taught you to believe.
It can be hard to peel off the outer layer of our identity that’s given by society – and the multiple layers of learned behavior, coping mechanisms, and biases. And just like how the actual act of peeling an onion brings tears to your eyes, this too shall be painful.

2. It’s Not a Happy Feeling of Ecstatic Joy; It’s Liberation
Yes, pain is the currency you have to pay to earn the real awakening. Contrary to what you might have heard, true awakening is not a “high” feeling of ecstatic joy. It’s also not about being on psychedelic and altered consciousness.
Although real awakening has moments or phases of a feel good vibe when everything syncs and it feels like the Universe is conspiring in your favor, it’s not a continuous thing.
Those who have truly awakened can transmute pain into growth and abundance. They are healers who help others process their pain and make sense of their sufferings.
But for that, first, they themselves have to go through immense pain and existential crisis. They are forced to face their shadow-self again and again until they learn their lessons and feel grounded.
That is what true awakening stands for – to be content with life, to understand the impermanence of all things, to find peace among chaos, and to be grounded in one’s reality.
And when emotions or external events try to shake those fundamentals, a truly awakened person observes and acknowledges them, but remains detached or unfazed, remaining secure in the knowledge that this is not the ultimate reality. The real awakening is being liberated.

3. It’s Not Spiritual Bypassing: Mastering The Inner World
Detaching from difficult emotions or unfavorable circumstances does not mean the psychological process of dissociating – to put a spiritual band-aid on uncomfortable events and avoiding confrontations or refusing accountability. No, that’s spiritual bypassing.
Real awakening happens when we understand our mind is a faithful servant but a dangerous master. We don’t allow it to call the shots. It’s a vehicle through which spiritual downloads come, we develop intuition, and get close to the Divine, but we don’t let it control us.
We don’t forgo our intellect and logic either. We need and use them for our day to day lives here on earth and make a beautiful living. We acknowledge our emotions and process them to have profound relationships with others.
True awakening is not denying our 3D existence, but to fully embrace it, live mindfully, be fully aware, and be involved with whatever reality is given to us by the cosmos, without fear, obsession, or fixation. Real awakening is mastering the inner world so that we co-create in the outer world.
4. Realization Is Not Enough: Co-creating the Outer World
On our journey of enlightenment or awakening, we soon realize that our inner reality creates our outer reality.
Our thoughts, dreams, emotions, fears, insecurities, everything has an influence on our external world. Anything we put our energy in – amplifies and becomes our reality. War, racism, poverty – everything is a reflection of our inner world.
However, this realization is just the beginning and if we resign by saying nothing is real, we’re back to spiritual bypassing.
So, what should we do? Consciously create our outer world based on our inner world, which we have already mastered.
When a feeling comes, say, jealousy, we pause and reflect. We ask ourselves –
“Why am I feeling this?”
“What core issues are hiding beneath this?”
“Which past trauma do I need to heal?”
“Which patterns do I need to break?”
And thereafter, we take intentional actions to make a positive change in our external world. Once we understand how our thoughts create our reality, we start owning our shadow side without blaming or wallowing in self-pity, and start living authentically.

5. Truth: Relentlessly Chase It

If you remember, we started this journey with the onion theory and the quest to find our inner truth. And after doing a lot of self-work and shadow-work, you will realize that you are back to truth, because it is the only thing that matters.
To be truly awakened, one has to be in relentless pursuit of authenticity – to live in their truth, to be their authentic self. Truth and nothing but the truth can bring you closer to the Divine.
So owning your truth and living truthfully is of the utmost importance for real awakening. But is there only one truth? The truth that you see and live? NO!
6. Love: Everything Boils Down To This
Spirituality is an extremely personal journey, unique to each individual. The lessons one learns along the way depends on their unique experiences, abilities, weaknesses, and gifts.
What is a revelation for you can be a detour for someone else. The layers of onion are very different for each one of us. So, the peeling process will be different too.
So, why judge someone who is living a truth that’s different from yours? You may not understand someone’s journey, but sure you can love them unconditionally, without trying to get them to see what you are seeing.
The real awakening comes when you can love others unconditionally without judgment, without fear, and without bias and acknowledge others’ truth with an open and expansive mind.
