When it comes to digital marketing, Dmitriy Makarov believes many beginners trip over the same hurdles. Copying others and rushing to scale, he says, are the most common mistakes that can derail growth before it even begins.

Born in 2001 in Kyiv, Ukraine, Makarov chose an unconventional route early on, starting his career much earlier than his peers. Today, he lives in London, where he continues to apply his principles, including the GMG principle, to both business and personal life, emphasizing mutual support and growth.  Now, as the owner of a marketing agency with more than 100 employees working worldwide, the entrepreneur recalls the mistakes he observed in startups that failed to reach their current stage.  

Two common missteps in marketing

“One of the most widespread mistakes, and this applies not only to digital marketing but to business in general, is copying other people’s strategies when entering the market,” Makarov said. Too often, he added, newcomers listen to speakers, read case studies or mimic what has worked elsewhere, expecting identical results.

But in a space where platforms constantly shift, algorithms evolve and audiences tire of trends, replication does not last. “What worked well even last quarter may already be completely irrelevant today,” he said.

Another frequent misstep, according to Dmitriy Makarov, is investing money in campaigns before conducting thorough testing. “Beginners often try to immediately ‘pour in budget’ without having data on how users behave at each stage of the funnel, which messages work, or what kind of visual presentation resonates with the target audience,” he explained. Without clear insights, scaling quickly becomes costly and ineffective.

Instead, Makarov recommends a disciplined, creative approach. “My advice is simple: in our field, those who win are the ones who think creatively, systematically, and know how to build cost-effective hypotheses for a large number of A/B tests,” he said. For him, adaptability is the ultimate competitive edge. “It is not the smartest who survive, but those who test faster and respond to changes.”

That philosophy reflects the personal framework Dmitriy Makarov calls GMG: Grind. Mastery. Growth. He credits GMG with shaping his entrepreneurial path, starting from his teenage years in Kyiv to his career as a self-taught digital marketing consultant. Rather than relying on formal education, he leaned on curiosity, persistence and experimentation. Between 2015 and 2017, he worked independently with local brands, young IT companies and esports projects, gaining practical knowledge “by doing.”

GMG remains central to how he solves marketing challenges. The grind, he says, comes from the willingness to put in consistent effort; mastery is about learning from both wins and failures; and growth is the result of combining those lessons into strategies that adapt to changing conditions.

With markets changing faster than ever, Dmitriy Makarov believes that GMG offers a mindset as relevant to startups as it is to seasoned companies. In his words, success does not come from following someone else’s playbook, it comes from writing your own. “The digital world is not an exact science, but an environment of constant adaptation,” he said. His advice: stay curious, test relentlessly and focus on building a process that can withstand rapid shifts.
