There will continue to be an emphasis placed on the mental wellbeing of our youth through 2026; the complete picture is not simply about risk, either – it will also contain elements that demonstrate resilience and creativity. The Jed Foundation released a report containing predictive trends related to the mental wellbeing of youth, including both the pressure placed on youth and positive collective societal responses. There are many stresses placed on young people – including but not limited to: comparison of themselves to others via social media; using AI to assist with homework; having an economy that is unpredictable; and, in many cases loss of community support through face-to-face interactions.
At the same time, there is an increasing level of coordination and proactivity among state and local governments, so there are going to be ways to help youth who are facing mental health challenges. One way Arizona has developed this support is through a training program designed by the Arizona Department of Education and JED, which provides training for school mental health professionals in identifying and addressing suicide risk in children and adolescents. In addition to having created this training program, the Texas District Mental Health Initiative has brought together seven school districts from across Texas to work together to create a system-wide approach to providing youth mental health support for all students at all campuses.
Numerous initiatives aimed at enhancing youth mental health through incorporation of mental wellness into the daily lives of students include the following activities : (1) teaching emotional skills as part of the curriculum, (2) creating peer support groups, (3) training school staff to recognize and support emotional needs of students, (4) facilitating easier access to more intensive services through the school system, etc.
As a result of these efforts, many students are now involved in providing input into how these programs should be developed by providing personal stories of their experiences, as well as helping adult stakeholders to understand what it is like to be a young person struggling in today’s world.
There are many concerns about youth mental health; however, all experts say that fixing youth mental health will require more than just short-term solutions; therefore, communities need to build strong and supportive in-person relationships, assess the impact of technology on young people, and provide young people with clear paths to getting help when they feel overwhelmed. Even with these challenges many experts are confident that there will be enough accurate information, effective school-based mental health programs, and youth voice to help youth mental health evolve from a period of crisis in 2026 to one of strength for youth across America.
