Neuro-Linguistic Programming: What Itโ€™s About

John Grinder and Richard Bandler created NLP when they noticed that traditional psychotherapy techniques werenโ€™t always effective, and they wanted to try a different way.

NLP provides effective ways to change the way a person thinks, approaches life, and views past events. It is believed to help a person effectively control their mind, thereby affecting their ability to control their life. NLP is considered a practical strategy that focuses on the โ€œhow.โ€

Ways NLP Can Help You in Life

1.You can take control of influences and beliefs.

NLP works with the idea that you may not always have control over the things that happen to your life, but you always have control of what goes inside your head.

Your feelings, emotions and thoughts are what you do, which are caused by complicated reasons, including beliefs or comments from people around you for things that you have experienced.

NLP helps you take control of these influences and beliefs. It uses techniques such as visualization, which helps you change the way you feel and think about past fierce events and even extreme fears or phobias.

2. You can harness powerful beliefs.

Your beliefs can be very powerful. Quack doctors have been using the power of belief to do harm on people by persuading them that they are sick and theyโ€™re about to die.

Similarly, if you have taken something that you believe can make you feel better, you usually get better. This is also known as the placebo effect.

What this means is that if you believe you can do something, then you probably can. However, you can also counter the restrictions brought about by beliefs and change them by asking questions such as:

  • Who told me that? Could they have been mistaken?
  • How do I know that I canโ€™t do it?

3. You can properly set your goals.

You may be familiar with the principle of setting goals. Whatโ€™s interesting is that NLP offers new insights on goal setting, which focuses on satisfaction.

According to NLP, you should make your goals positive and focus on the things that you have, not on the things that you donโ€™t have or those that youโ€™d like to lose. Think about what you want to achieve. For instance, you donโ€™t just want to purchase a carโ€”you want to drive it. It would be easier to stay motivated if youโ€™re reaching for a satisfying goal.

4. You can ask questions that would lead to a more positive outlook in life.

NLP suggests that the mind actively seeks answers to questions. For example, if you ask yourself why you feel bad, your mind will immediately look for answers, which could make you feel worse. But with NLP, the idea is to ask the appropriate questions such as:

  • Why do I need change?
  • What will happen to my life after I change?
  • What should I do to change?

These questions are believed to result to a more positive outlook in life.

5. NLP can help establish dissociation.

People can feel uncomfortable, comfortable, or nothing at all depending on many situations. Comfortable situations donโ€™t need change, but uncomfortable situations must be addressed.

Stage fright, anger management, resentment, and a strong dislike for situations are just a few examples. These issues canโ€™t be resolved if a person is unable to dissociate and view the situation from another perspective. If the conscious mind can be trained to become the watcher and not the one being watched, then stress can be dissociated to bring a new perspective.

6. Context reframing can trigger emotional changes.

Once you have learned how to dissociate, youโ€™ll then be able to reframe the context. Context reframing is a technique to help understand various perspectives and choose that aligns best with your interest. Emotions can be positive or negative, which can make a person feel helpless or empowered. If the context of empowerment and helplessness or positivity and negativity are reframed, then it would be easier to take control of the situation.

7. You can better anchor yourself.

In anchoring yourself, you need to focus on your personal objectives and consider other external factors from this perspective to reflect and take appropriate action. For example, if you find yourself in a difficult situation, you can anchor yourself by thinking of the whole situation from your perspective. If this results in a negative emotion, then you must act accordingly. But if you donโ€™t feel any worries, then you there is nothing to do. Anchoring yourself can help you manage your sadness and restore your happiness.

Closing Thoughts

There are different ways NLP or neuro-linguistic programming can help you in life. Persuasion, rapport, emotional positivity, and influence can be enhanced using NLP techniques. These strategies can help a person improve their ability to manage people, and enhance their leadership and behavioral skills. With NLP, you can become an effective problem solver and tackle lifeโ€™s turmoils with grace.
