What Is Sleep Divorce Meaning Exactly?
According to a survey by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, sleep divorce trend is a rather intriguing practice where couples occasionally or consistently sleep in separate rooms, apart from their partner to improve sleep, escaping issues like snoring or restlessness.
It’s not about falling out of love or anything dramatic like that; it’s about getting a good night’s sleep without any disturbances like snoring, cover theft, or early alarms.

But Is Sleep Divorce Trend Healthy?
Dr. Seema Khosla, a pulmonologist and spokesperson for the AASM, believes this trend is a result of the understanding that poor sleep can turn anyone into a grumpy bear and lead to more arguments with our partners.
Resentment may also creep in when one person disrupts the other’s sleep, which is definitely not great for a relationship. So, for the sake of both health and happiness, some couples are choosing the path of separate sleeping quarters.
In fact, a recent survey of 2,005 adults in the U.S. conducted by the AASM found that millennials are leading the way in the “sleep divorce” trend, with 43% of them choosing to snooze in separate beds.
Generation X is not far behind at 33%, followed by Generation Z at 28%, and baby boomers at 22%. Looks like millennials are not just changing the way we work and socialize; they’re revolutionizing how we sleep too!
Dr. Erin Flynn-Evans, a consultant to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, pointed out that there are indeed some benefits to sleeping separately. For instance, if one partner has a sleep disorder, it can negatively impact the other person’s sleep as well.
When one is an insomniac, the other might end up waking up in solidarity. And let’s not forget the different chronotypes – when a night owl and an early bird share a bed, it can lead to a restless night for both.

But, hey, sleeping together has its merits too! Dr. Flynn-Evans explained that snoozing beside your partner might actually help identify any hidden sleep issues.
For instance, if your partner starts complaining about your loud snoring, you might want to get checked for sleep apnea – it’s all about taking care of each other’s health.
Ultimately, it boils down to individual preferences and sleep habits. Dr. Daniel Shade, a sleep specialist, suggested that if one partner’s snoring or other nighttime quirks disturb the other’s slumber, it might be time to consider the “sleep divorce.”
However, if everything’s smooth and there are no sleep issues, cuddling up in the same bed can release those lovely “cuddling hormones” like oxytocin, bringing you both even closer.
