1. Denial – The Cloak of Protection

Denial initially feels like a heavy blindfold covering your eyes. Though their truth is a bitter reality, there is a sense that something is amiss.  When you have to confront your reality, denial is your shield against something that would otherwise tear you apart and suffocate you. 

You feel more confined the more you attempt to defend yourself. It feels like a never-ending cycle of pain with every inch of progress you make. As soon as the truth begins to come to light, your healing journey begins.

2. Shock – The Earthquake

The stage trembles as the curtain drops, bouncing off the floor. Your mind wanders as shock numbs but burns like glass fragments. 

You might experience disbelief, despair, or rage. Only surviving the initial spasms is required at this stage; strength is not required. You must maintain your composure. And after a while, your heartbeat will be audible again through the breathless silence.

3. Recognition – Turning Toward the Light

When you eventually say its name, you can recognize it. You can clearly see the wound and can see how it has permeated every aspect of your life. The air changes and the weight, even slightly, is lifted during this phase, which can feel like the first drop of rain after a protracted drought. The first actual flow of water through something that was previously stagnant is awareness.

4. Acceptance – The Quiet Nod

Acceptance is an acknowledgment, not a surrender. When you start to say, “Yes, this happened, it was painful, but now it is a part of my story.” You begin to accept the ups and downs during this phase of the healing process. 

You can be strong one day and then stumble the next. Both are legitimate. Both are appropriate. Acceptance is the ability to endure rain without relying on it to stop.

5. Release – Letting the River Flow

After holding your breath for too long, release it with a deep exhale. You give up on trying to change the past or make the present take on a form it doesn’t want to. 

What you can no longer contain, the “should haves,” “what ifs,” and the versions of yourself that were stuck in yesterday, you allow the river to carry. You discover that simply being here, right now, is sufficient for inner healing, which is subtle but effective.

6. Reflect – Stepping Outside the Story

Reflection is the balcony view of your life. You rise above the chaos and see the patterns, the choices, the moments that shaped you. From here, you can breathe without drowning. You can see the younger you with tenderness instead of judgment. Reflection is the mirror that shows not just the scars, but the resilience that carried you this far.

7. Emptiness – The Sacred Hollow

Emptiness feels like loss, but it’s also a sacred clearing. It’s the part of the healing journey stages where you’ve shed so much, you hardly recognize yourself. There’s grief here, for the self you had to leave behind. 

But this hollow space is where new roots grow. It’s a winter before the spring, a silence before the song.

8. Integration – Stitching the New Skin

Integration is slow, steady work. You weave new habits into your days, not to erase the past, but to give the future a stronger foundation. It’s awkward at first, like learning to walk in new shoes. But over time, the new ways of thinking and feeling begin to fit. 

The inner healing becomes tangible. You notice it in the way you speak to yourself, the way you choose your relationships, the way you stand taller.

9. Transform – Becoming The Mountain

This is one of the healing journey stages. Transformation is not becoming unrecognizable, rather, it’s about becoming more of yourself.
