Personality assessments are always subjective, and not all cultures conform to the same general perceptions. Let’s see where our journey takes us, and perhaps we’ll even be able to figure out why hair length “speaks” for us.
Since it is quite a complex topic all on its own, we’ll be looking at the length of women’s hair only. Keep reading to learn more!
Very Short Styles
Women with ultra-short hair are often viewed as confident and intelligent. Because of their confidence, they come across as pleasant, sociable, and sometimes even flirty.
The clean, fresh-cut allows observers a clear view of their face and suggests openness and integrity, and a certain amount of discipline that is occasionally interrupted by bouts of impulsiveness.
Women with short hair are often seen as being independent thinkers and go-getters. Many lead active lives, and dealing with a short style after sports or a workout at the gym is much easier and quicker than it is if your hair is longer.
Wearing your hair very short sends a message: you’re happy to define what it means to be a woman on your own terms and are capable of analytical thought with a pristine pulse.
You’re not too worried about conforming to social norms. Your sense of adventure is your chief source of happiness. You seldom find a reason to be bored. You welcome change and tackle life head-on.
Above the Shoulder
The bob cut, and similar, indicate your ability to find balance. It also points to a straight-forward manner in your dealings socially and in business. You’re normally organized and pretty sure of yourself.
Like your shorter-haired sisters, you’re pretty much a no-nonsense type, and you have a wash-and-go hairstyle to go with it. There’s so much to do in life without worrying too much about your hair, yet you balance this with your need to look pleasantly presentable at all times.
This absence of complexes means that although you tend towards conformity and the conventional, you are not so keen on rigid routines. You have a penchant for experiencing new things but are unlikely to take extreme risks.
You are bouncy, like your bob. Because you sometimes act without thinking, people might take you for a bit of a butterfly. This is usually far from the truth since you usually operate from a stable base.
You like to wear your softer, feminine side on your shoulder. It gives you a certain elegance and sophistication, both attributes that you value. And, like a signature perfume, can add a little mystery, or since, to your life.Women who wear their hair shoulder-length are generally versatile. This aspect of their personality is reflected in the different ways they can style their hair depending on their mood and the occasion. With shoulder-length hair, anything from wearing your hair up for elegance in this evening to ponytails for practical DIY jobs at home is possible.
Your hairstyle is appealing in a middle-of-the-road kind of way. You make new friends easily, mainly because you like to talk and engage with others at their level. As a people person, you laugh a lot. Your basic philosophy is that you’re meant to enjoy life and have fun.
You’re good at keeping friends since you take life as it comes. Despite being fun-loving, you are warm and sympathetic, perhaps even empathetic, by nature. Your ability to listen makes you an excellent confidante.
Patience is your chief virtue. If you have always had long hair, and no other cut, you tend to daydream and be pensive more than your peers with shorter hair. Despite your daydreams, you tend to side with more conventional, traditional values.
You’re often a bookworm, and like nothing more than reading in a cozy armchair with a cup of tea at your side. You tend to be somewhat introverted, but this does not mean that you lack confidence. Your more reserved nature gives you the space to think deeply and seriously about what matters in life.
In relationships, you know precisely the kind of partner you want, and can often be quite demanding when it comes to “keeping up standards.” Some people might view you as being fussy when it comes to keeping your home neat, clean, and tidy. This, like your long, shiny crowning glory, is a source of pride to you.
Patience brings with it perseverance. You have a quite determination that helps you achieve your goals, often much to the envy of your shorter-haired colleagues
You have definite views on hair care, and you have always maintained that a good hairbrush, aside from a decent shampoo and other hair care products, is half the battle won. You’ve been using a bamboo brush for quite some time now, and wonder why they weren’t available until now.
What About Color and Curls?
Whether your hair is straight, wavy, or curly also has people making assumptions about your personality. Generally, they seem to think that the curlier your hair, the more fun-loving you are, although there is no data to prove this one way or the other.
The use of hair color can indicate a certain degree of adventurousness. The more radical your departure from your natural hair color, the more confident you appear to others. It sends the message that you know what you like, and you’re comfortable with your image.
Daring to be different by dyeing your hair with dramatic colors, such as a dash of bright yellow, purple, green, blue, or pink, might be one way of flagging the rebel within.
Hair dye can be one way to signal aspects of your personality that are not usually assigned to your hair length alone. It’s one way of adding a dimension to your already beautiful self.
Your Best Beauty Asset
Aside from your actual personality, clean, healthy hair, no matter what its length, is your best beauty asset. Hair that is well cared for, with regular professional cuts, and regular shampooing and conditioning, is guaranteed to give people you meet the best impression.
To some extent, your hair care regime will depend on the length of your hair. Shorter hair can often withstand more frequent washing. It is also likely to require a surprising amount of conditioner if the wearer uses styling gel.
Neck-length and shoulder-length hair will need frequent trimming and styling to keep it healthy and keep it in shape. Infrequent visits to your hairstylist will lead to split ends and lackluster hair. And we all know that bah hair days are downright depressing!
A healthy head of hair also lets you transition from short to medium-length and long hair more quickly. And a smile to that, and you have a winning combo!
Changing the Length of Your Hair
If you have had different lengths of hair at various points in your life, you might like to think about why you decided to change, especially if the decision (from very long to very short, for example) was drastic.
Perhaps you did the opposite. Maybe you had short hair for years, and then suddenly decided to grow it long, only to revert to your old super-short cut after several years of trying to let it grow.
We know that personality is a complex topic. Instinctively, when we have the freedom in society to wear our hair whichever way we like, we tend to revert to the type of cut that is suited to—and stereotypical of—our basic personalities.
Choice and Change
Just as we choose our clothes and shoes, and even our spectacles to suit our personality—how we are—we can choose to accentuate aspects of our nature at different times of our lives.
Some people choose their hair length purely for practical reasons, depending on their job or main pleasure activity, and that, in turn, might be reflective of their personality.
Some of us show ourselves to be desirous of acceptance, and will often adapt our hair length to suit the personal preference of a new partner. In the end, though, some sort of compromise might have to be reached, so friends and partners should not be too shocked if suddenly one day you opt for something completely different.
At first, they might be surprised, but they’ll eventually come around to realizing that deep down, you’re still the same person inside. You are, after all, so much more than the length of your hair!
