Processing Emotions in the Body: How to Stop Solving Feelings in Your Head

You’re not able to process the

When you try to ‘solve’ them mentally only, you aren’t really capable of processing emotions. Stuck in your head with endless loops of stories, arguments, and what-ifs won’t help you get out of this trap, and you’ll never find relief. On the contrary, processing emotions in the body requires you to do something else: you have to switch from fixing to feeling mode.

You should not resist your feelings or attempt to change them with your thoughts; on the contrary, start recognizing them in your body. Inquire: Where is this feeling situated? Is it a tight chest, a stomach knot, a throat lump, or are your shoulders heavy? Processing emotions in the body is first done by doing this soft body scan, which will allow your sensations to point to the location of your feelings.

Once you find it, give that place space. Processing emotions in the body means you stop arguing with the feeling and start noticing it. You might breathe into that area, soften your muscles slightly, and imagine the emotion having permission to be there. No judgment, no rushing—just presence.

Let the mental stories soften. When your mind wants to jump back into analysis (“Why am I like this?” “This shouldn’t bother me”), gently return to the body. Processing emotions in the body is like riding a wave: the more you tense against it, the rougher it feels; the more you allow it, the easier it passes.
