Youth Mental Health Corps Helps Young People Heal—and Enter the Behavioral Health Workforce

The Youth Mental Health Corps is a rapidly emerging as one of the most innovative and effective solutions for youth mental health in 2025. The launch of the Youth Mental Health Corps in a handful of states in 2024 marked the beginning of a program which deploys trained young adults in schools and community organizations to offer mentoring, navigation, and youth mental health support, at the same time, establishing new career pathways in behavioral health.

By 2025, the expansion of the Youth Mental Health Corps has been significant, with the program now active in eleven rather than four states and having hundreds of Corps members who serve in over 160 locations nationwide. These members play a crucial role in the mental health of students as they facilitate access to counseling, lead wellness groups, and link families with local resources, in this way, youth mental health support becomes more understandable and less daunting because it is done by near, peers and not only authority figures.

The Youth Mental Health Corps model is a device that resolves only one problem at a time, i.e., the scarcity of mental health professionals and the need for early, culturally responsive youth mental health support. The members of the Corps are given training, stipends, and mentorship, hence a bridge for them to enter the professions of counseling, social work, and psychology while directly fostering the community’s wellbeing.
