Preventive mental health care is beginning to be included on the national level with other medical preventive measures such as immunizations and regular blood pressure check- ups. The experts are advocating for a plan to include preventive mental health care at the core of a serious attempt to improve the overall health of Americans as the public is talking to its elected officials about how to improve health. Rather than waiting until there is a crisis, the new objective is to intervene to prevent many behavioral health disorders from developing in full.
Most chronic mental illnesses begin prior to the age of 25, yet most resources are still allocated to the treatment of individuals after they have reached a crisis stage. Because of this, many young adults wait until they are in crisis before receiving support; including problems in school or at work, or using drugs or alcohol. By providing preventive mental health care at primary care clinics, community centers and schools, these facilities can serve as warning zones and locations to proactively intervene.
To provide preventive mental health care requires that health care practitioners routinely screen for anxiety and depression during a patient’s appointment with their primary care practitioner. It also includes providing outreach to distressed teens prior to reaching a crisis and providing protective factors to families and communities. Further it requires additional investments in housing, food security and fair wage employment as there is more to preventive mental health care than just providing therapy; it will also require being able to provide for the safety of one’s mind through the provision of basic needs through-out a person’s life.
Professionals caution that without adequate preventive mental health services, expenses will continue to grow – not just through hospitalisation costs, but also through loss of productivity; prison time; and intergenerational trauma. Conversely, a well-developed preventive mental health system can result in a reduction of hardship and savings of billions of dollars.
To this end, for many average Americans the first interaction they will have will be with a child’s doctor or school counselor providing an encouraging conversation when seeking assistance; rather than waiting until they have spent part of the night in an emergency room. As such, PMH services will allow for the identification of the “whispers” of distress as opposed to being reactive to the “screams.”
