In Michigan, mental health awareness month (May 2026) is being observed through a proclamation issued byGovernor Gretchen Whitmer(TN 2019) which describes the extent of the problem and what actions the state is taking to address it. The short definition for the term-mental health is provided as-mental, psychological and social well-being that influences how an individual think, feel, act, deals with stress and relate to others. It states that anyone, young or old, of anysex, race, ethnicity, income, religion or education -may be distressed with mental health conditions and early intervention can have impact on people’s entire life course.
A second aspect of Michigan’s Mental Health Awareness Month proclamation is the public introduction of launching of the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline through Michigan’s Crisis and Access Line (MiCAL). The proclamation states that 988 is a “seven-digit number toll-free number that will connect Michigan residents to trained crisis counselors 24 hours a day, 7 days a week”…for times of suicidal ideation, mental health or substance use crisis, or general emotional upset. The governor’s office uses the statewide roll out of 988/MiCAL as a means for “shifting away from the ‘underserved’ and ‘overrun’ emergency department or law enforcement-based crisis care system.”
The lawyer wanted to stress that it is still relevant in the state of Michigan. It is written that “residents will work to promote awareness and understanding” and “to encourage those living with mental health conditions to seek and receive support” during the month of mental health awareness. It is involving state words to legitimate the fact that mental health is associated with health, the lawyer wanted to communicate that mental health choices.
Governor Whitmer‘s statement connects Michigan Mental Health Awareness Month to broad policy discussions. It celebrates milestones in access including the governor‘s point that the administration has supplied the funding for community mental health and crisis services and was issued in the middle of ongoing policy debates over mental health system funding and organization.
For residents, the declaration is acknowledging and motivational. It acknowledges that many Michiganders are overwhelmed and have feelings of stress, grief, addiction and other issues and calls on them to reach out to the resources 988, local providers and peer support. As Mental Health Awareness Month is underway, advocates hope the governor‘s words will lead to more finding out about mental health, reaching out to loved ones and advocating for an easier to access system pre crisis.
