Relationship Rituals: 6 Ideas That Will Bring You Closer To One Another

Author : Dana Lam

One of the best ways to cultivate romance and foster togetherness in your relationship is by following a few relationship rituals. Practicing relationship rituals on a regular basis can bring you both closer to each other and keep the spark alive.

Happiness is one of the ultimate goals in life as well as in a relationship. We are all united in this journey to a happy life and each person has their own formula, their own rituals, to achieve happiness, filled with joyful living.

How do you enjoy all the wonders of being, while sharing the path with your significant other? Well for starters, being in a healthy relationship means having your needs met, while also fulfilling your partnerโ€™s. Exchanging love and caring is what keeps tenderness and unity between a couple, two things essential in any relationship or marriage.

We accomplish this by showing our partner every day how special they are and how important they are in our life. Living a life that is filled with pleasures, giving, and receiving unconditional love and by being intentional.

Being Intentional In Your Relations

Dedication is key to most things in life. For example, meditation must be done every day, not a day skipped to get the full and wonderful benefits of it. Love is not any different, it must be cultivated every day. If meditation is making your soul a priority, having love rituals is making your relationship a priority.

Studies show that having rituals before performing certain tasks makes teams work better together and like each other more. It can be something as simple as performing a sequence of rhythmic foot stomps and claps or sending love letters every month even though you live together. Finding something that resonates for both of you is important.

It can be a special day you celebrate every month with simple love reminders or by preparing their favorite breakfast food. Or even something that you plan ahead and create big expectations for. It doesnโ€™t matter how it is demonstrated, how big or small. What matters are the intentions involved and the want to make something special for the one you love.

The Importance Of Creating Routines In Relationship

Our daily lives can sometimes be overwhelming and take us away from the present, making it easy to not be mindful about our life and our partners. Thatโ€™s why a ritual is so important. By creating the habit of doing something, in this case, rituals of love, it becomes part of your daily โ€œto-doโ€ list and itโ€™s no longer a strange thing that needs extreme planning or massive amounts of energy.

It can be something as simple as bringing your partner a cup of coffee, but with a good morning note, or making the bed with messages on the pillow if you wonโ€™t see each other for the day. This strengthens our bonds and creates special little moments that only you and your partner share. You then create personal involvement which is crucial for the benefits of rituals to emerge.

Some Ideas For Rituals

1. Morning Meditation.

Meditation has great benefits for the body and mind. By doing it with your partner youโ€™ll get all of them plus the endorphins of love, making it a great combo. If you donโ€™t have a practice meditating, you can try guided meditations on apps like Lojong or Calm.

Make this your morning ritual for a great start to the day. Another great way to spend quality time together is through a moving meditation like taking a walk or a bike ride at the beginning or end of your day.

2. Planning Surprise Dates.

Forget the usual movie night or dinner dates, itโ€™s time to get creative! You can take turns planning dates weekly or monthly. If you donโ€™t have the time or need some help join the Date of the Month Club where you will receive 2 new date ideas each month.

Leave all the research and planning to the experts. This will insure you and your partner have a unique experience every month.

3. Read Together.

Is there a book that both of you like? Maybe read a passage of it every day. When I lived apart from my boyfriend, he would read The Book of Awakening, by Mark Nepo to me in the morning. Thatโ€™s a great way to find subjects that resonate for both of you and also amazing conversation starters.

4. Cooking Together.

Want to try a new recipe? Create a monthly, or weekly activity to try cooking new foods with your partner. By sharing tasks, you can create a delicious meal together and have your own gastronomic ritual.

5. Monthly Relationship Check-In.

How do you know how things are going in your relationship if you donโ€™t ask? Itโ€™s highly recommended that you do a monthly relationship check-in.  You can create your own questions or use the ones weโ€™ve created here.

6. Undivided Attention.

Today we have so much fighting for our attention. There are distractions everywhere. Turning off your phone and all electronics for at least 15 minutes a day can be a great way to bond and connect with each other.  We have had some of our clients complain that their partner is always on their phone which makes them feel disconnected.

Putting your phone to bed an hour before bedtime is another great way to connect with your partner.  You may want to also leave your phone at home or in the car when you go out to dinner, so you wonโ€™t be tempted to pick it up. This one ritual will make an amazing difference in your relationship.

Bonus Date Idea

Speaking of undivided attention, what if you had an entire day of no electronics? No social media, news, Internet, or cell phones for 24 hours. The thought of this for some may be terrifying or even unthinkable, but the results are so rewarding.

This could be a ritual that you do once a month. It may be challenging at first, but you can think of things you can do without these items ahead of time. Maybe create a jar of ideas of things to do without electricity. You knowโ€ฆ old-fashioned fun without technology!

Find Something That Resonates For Both Of You

For us, from the very beginning, we began the ritual of celebrating the anniversary of the day we met on April 14th. We celebrate this special day not just once per year, but monthly as a reminder of the importance of our meeting. Sometimes itโ€™s just saying โ€œHappy Anniversaryโ€ as we exchange cards and sometimes small gifts.

When either of us travels, we leave a love note of some kind for the other. A ritual can be something as easy as bringing your partner a cup of coffee in the morning, or making the bed because you know itโ€™s important to them.

There are many ways to create relationship rituals and we hope you try some of the ones mentioned here as a great place to start creating an even tighter bond and relationship with your significant other.
