Experts Warn Against Relying Solely on Chatbot Platforms for Mental Health Guidance

Author :

Concerns have been raised over the increasing reliance on chatbot platforms for mental health guidance, with experts warning of potential inaccuracies and psychological harm.

Malaysian Psycho-Spiritual Well-being Association deputy chairman and psychologist Dr. Adnan Omar highlighted the dangers of using platforms like ChatGPT for mental health inquiries, emphasizing that while they offer convenience and anonymity, their diagnostic capabilities may be inaccurate.

One such case is that of Kelly Tan, an accountant who turned to ChatGPT for solutions to her trouble sleeping. After receiving a diagnosis of insomnia from the platform, Tan purchased medication without seeking a second opinion from a healthcare professional.

However, she later discovered that her sleep problems were caused by other factors, leading to dependence on medication and further complications.

Say No To Chatbot Platforms for Mental Health Guidance

Dr. Adnan emphasized the importance of seeking professional help from psychologists and psychiatrists for accurate diagnosis and treatment, particularly for complex mental health disorders.

He cautioned against the potential for chatbot platforms to overlook crucial nuances and provide inadequate guidance, especially for conditions requiring medication with varying dosages.

While chatbot platforms contribute positively to enhancing mental health knowledge and understanding, Dr. Adnan stressed the need for proper regulation and oversight to prevent misinformation and inappropriate guidance.

He called for continued efforts in education, literacy, and addressing systemic barriers to accessing mental healthcare to create a society where mental health is prioritized and supported for all individuals.

The concerns raised highlight the importance of seeking professional help for mental health issues and the limitations of relying solely on chatbot platforms for guidance. As Malaysia progresses in understanding and treating mental health, efforts must focus on ensuring accurate and accessible care for all individuals.
