Why Travis Scott Will Not Face Criminal Charges?

In a statement obtained by the Rolling Stone, Scott’s attorney, Kent Schaffer stated, “My client Travis Scott will not be charged with criminal charges”.

He said, “Decision by the Harris County District Attorney confirms what we have known all along”, He added, “Travis Scott is not responsible for the AstroWorld tragedy.”

This statement by Schaffer, in line with investigative reporting by various media outlets and federal and state government reports, emphasizes that event safety crises are primarily the responsibility of organizers, operators, and contractors, rather than performers.

Schaffer further asserts that Travis Scott, while awaiting the District Attorney’s decision to not press charges, has been unfairly singled out despite stopping the show multiple times and being unaware of the unfolding events.

With the conclusion of this chapter, it is hoped that the government’s efforts will now focus on the crucial task of preventing future heartbreaking tragedies like AstroWorld from ever occurring again.

District Attorney Kim Ogg, during a press conference on Thursday, clarified that their scope was limited to determining whether criminal activity had been involved in this disastrous and horrific event, encompassing individuals from the highest to the lowest positions within the organization.

Criminal charges for Travis Scott, along with promoters Live Nation and ScoreMore not being faced, but they are potentially liable for billions of dollars in damages due to numerous civil claims accusing them of wrongful death, personal injuries, and negligence. These claims have been consolidated into a large multidistrict litigation in Harris County.

Several attorneys representing the plaintiffs in the civil trial either did not respond to requests for comment or declined, citing an ongoing gag order preventing them from discussing the case with the media.

Scott has refuted the allegations regarding his responsibility for the tragedy and has previously sought to have the lawsuits dismissed. Festival promoters Live Nation and its subsidiary Scoremore have also filed motions to dismiss the lawsuits.

“Nothing Travis did or failed to do fits within the Texas criminal code”, Schaffer told Reuters earlier on Thursday.

During Thursday’s press conference, Houston Police Chief Troy Finner announced that the police department intends to make its criminal investigation public within the upcoming weeks.

While addressing questions about the tragedy, Chief Finner refrained from providing specific details regarding the driving causes or the protocol followed during the show stoppage, which lasted for half an hour.

He emphasized the importance of reading the forthcoming report to gain a clearer understanding of the incident.
