Another sad fact about men is that from an early age they are taught to be strong no matter what, even if inside they are falling apart. They will put on a happy face and say I am okay when actually inside they are drowning in misery, as it is seen as a violation of the masculinity code to show pain. It is less likely for men to seek help for mental health issues but they commit suicide at rates many times greater than women which is a very sad outcome of them keeping their suffering a secret.

Another sad reflection on men is that their value is most of the time judged by what they can offer rather than by who they are. Infact, many are conditioned to believe that their value depends solely on them being the breadwinner, the fixer, the protector, or the performer, thus turning every failure into a source of self-disappointment. These expectations only serve to isolate them more when they think they are slipping, adding to shame, anxiety and depression.

Actually, men are capable of having a deep love however a lot of them do not find that love returned in a similarly emotionally secure manner. In reality, although they are expected to be the strong and reliable ones for others, the level of gentleness, comprehension, or comfort they get rarely equals their contributions. Thus, a lot of men are engaged in silent struggles – financial worries loneliness traumas, work-related stress, family expectations – without ever talking about the feelings they experience.

Unfortunately, men’s mental health is significantly impacted by stigma. Studies on men experiencing mental illness stigma highlight that the societal norms of masculine strength and lack of expression hinder them from communicating, seeking help, or even acknowledging their emotions. This kind of stigma acts as a barrier to seeking help, causes harm to relationships, and turns silent suffering into a risk factor for mental illness over time.

On one hand, men are commended for their strength; on the other hand, they are penalized if they exhibit emotion. This contradiction sends a confusing message of “Be human, but not too human” which is really harsh. A lot of men have been experienced being ignored, dismissed, or mocked for their vulnerability so much that in the end, they just shut down completely.

It’s almost unheard of for men who decide to end their lives to do so impulsively. Most often, they have been ignored, misunderstood, or invalidated for such a long time that they have finally reached the point of no return and that is their silent cry for help.

Its being able to admit that youre not, to asking for help, and to believing that youre worthy of receiving support just like anyone else.
