In 2026, mental health among young individuals is still a significant issue; however, findings from the Jed Foundation indicate both threats and opportunities for the future. According to the foundation’s latest report on youth mental health trends, issues such as isolation, financial instability, social media exposure, and technology driven by AI will continue to place pressure on youth mental wellness. At the same time, there are states and school districts implementing programs that keep young people from suffering through these issues with education dollars.
The finding in this report shows a growing collaboration between education departments, health care providers and non-profit organizations in support of youth mental wellness. In Arizona, for instance, The Department of Education has partnered with JED in developing training programs for mental health professionals working in schools on how to identify youth at risk of suicide and how best to intervene—this is a critical component of ensuring that young people are well taken care of! In Texas, seven school districts have created a District-wide Mental Health Initiative as a means of improving and unifying access to mental health services for students through effective and coordinated support systems across multiple school campuses as well as throughout their neighboring communities.
Experts assert that it is important to consider the voices and experiences of young people in order to improve their mental health. Peer support, advisory council involvement, and involvement through awareness campaigns is helping to reduce stigma and to encourage youth to seek out assistance. While some young people continue
to face challenges with anxiety, depression and feeling alone, there is growing optimism that the number of programs targeted at protecting the mental health of young people provides an opportunity for hope. The next step is replicating this success so that all young people (as opposed to only those living in pilot districts) have access to such programs.
