As of 2026, the mental health of youth continues to dominate national agendas. In an analysis conducted by The JED Foundation, while youth mental health presents as complex, there is still cause for optimism. The JED’s report identified trends that could lead to improvements in youth mental health, including increasing levels of isolation, fewer opportunities to build networks of support in-person, and greater exposure to harmful content online, as well as significant investments in youth mental health prevention and school-based services. Social isolation, insecure economic situations, and the expansion of artificial intelligence-based services will continue to increase anxiety and body image issues and increase the number of youth that experience suicidal ideation.
State and local governments around the USA are working together to strengthen their school mental health systems so that when students need assistance, they have a path to receive it. An example of a state government working in concert with local government is Arizona, where the state has initiated an effort to prepare and support the professional development of school mental health providers with evidence-informed training regarding how to identify and intervene with adolescents who are experiencing suicidal thoughts or behaviors.
In Texas, on the other hand, school districts are partnering to create youth mental health systems and crisis response models within their school districts as opposed to having each school operating independently of another. Young people are taking a leadership role in advocating for better youth mental health initiatives through peer-led clubs, advocacy efforts using social media, and sharing their stories about lived experiences to reduce the stigma related to seeking help. The JED report stresses the value of strong collaborative relationships among schools, families and communities in enhancing the mental health of youth in the overall community.
