Seasonal Depression Peaks in November: Why Early Support Matters

The U.S. has seen a significant spike in seasonal depression over the past few weeks as evidenced by a new research study that was conducted by Thriveworks clinicians who analysed the pattern of requests for treatment from 2020 to 2024. They found that there is an increased demand for assistance related to low mood, lack of energy, and lack of motivation just prior to the holidays, in many cases, a few weeks prior to when the average person realises they are experiencing seasonal depression rather than simply “having the winter blues.”

Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) Associated with seasonal depression. Fewer hours of daylight cause people suffering from SAD to suffer from fatigue or sleep a lot less than they usually do and their motivation level to do things decreases and their appetite decreases. For example, an individual suffering from SAD may feel like the “lights have gone out” and will not be able to work productively, support family members, or be an effective student.

There are many ways to treat seasonal depression both practically and professionally. Some practical approaches include using a light therapy box, getting outside every day to walk, following a consistent sleep schedule, and maintaining your regular social contact with other people, even though you may feel like withdrawing. Many people benefit from either medication or talking therapies when they have long-term seasonal depression and/or have had thoughts of harming themselves during peak months.

Experts agree that seasonal depression cannot be considered a personal flaw or a lack of motivation because it is biological and therefore responds to external support; this makes it easier to understand your right to speak openly about your experiences with it to family, friends and co-workers reducing shame associated with seeking help early. For mental health providers and employers; by planning in advance for those experiencing seasonal depression by expanding appointment times; sharing psycho-education related to the condition and allowing flexibility in employee schedules can create a less overwhelming and more manageable time of year for everyone involved.
