In early 2026, providers experienced a chaotic ride regarding mental health funding as $2 billion in federal grant funding for mental health and addiction programs was cut off completely by the Trump Administration due to pressure. There was no notification, so for 24 hours, clinics, crisis centers, and community organizations were left wondering if they would have to lay off staff or shut down programs completely due to lack of funding. These community service organizations receive the majority of their mental health funding to operate constantly available crisis hotlines, operate mobile mental health teams, and provide mental health treatment services at low or no cost.
Advocates, providers, and families expressed their outrage in the most immediate form possible, stating that cutting the funding would create a dangerous situation for them as well as the most vulnerable people who depend on these funding sources for their very lives. The American Medical Association, The National Alliance on Mental Illness, and other professional organizations issued urgent public statements indicating how funding disruptions threaten a person’s ability to receive care when faced with other major barriers to receiving mental health care. Congress put pressure on the administration to reverse their decision to stop $1.9-2 billion in mental health funding, which was supplied through SAMHSA, and the funding was restored in less than 24 hours.
Though reversed, this episode illustrated to many providers in the United States how weak and poor the mental health funding systems and infrastructures are in this country. Some providers stated this event created distrust among providers and that they are concerned for similar disruptions going forward especially with Mexico’s larger proposals to restructure all federal health agencies.
Consequently, there are many people receiving either long-term treatment or crisis intervention services that have been stressed out about whether or not they would lose their healthcare coverage overnight due to the way political decisions are made, and would like to see that protections are put in place to specifically safeguard core mental health services from sudden political actions so that these lifesaving services will continue to be available.
