According to research in 2015, which was published in the journal, Personality and Individual Differences, there might be a link between psychopathy and yawning, most particularly, how you yawn. Researchers concluded that people exhibiting contagious yawning did not show any psychopathic tendencies, rather their yawning is proof of their empathy. However, psychopaths were quite immune to this yawn test, and their lack of empathy is widely known. So when it comes to the question, “do psychopaths yawn when someone else does?”, the answer is no.
So, why do psychopaths not yawn? Experts believe that empathy is one of the most important psychological and mental factors that can cause a person to catch a yawn, whenever they see someone else doing it. And that is where psychopathy comes in.
If you have empathy, you will easily yawn seeing someone else yawn. And if you have a lack of empathy, chances are you will be immune to it.
And it’s not just that psychopaths don’t catch yawns. Researchers also tested the participants on how easily they startle and found that psychopaths don’t startle that easily, due to their lack of fear. And if you don’t startle easily, the chances of you catching a yawn is highly unlikely.
Bottomline
Jennifer Golbeck, a noted scientist and professor says that even though this sort of psychopath test or personality test might not be a diagnostic tool for psychopathy, it clearly shows how an individual’s inherent personality traits can affect their external behavior in so many ways. Who would have ever thought that there might be a link between something as simple as yawning and psychopathy?!
So even though there is indeed a link between a psychopath and yawning, it’s not the only criteria to detect psychopathy in someone. So, if you are someone who didn’t yawn watching someone else yawn, then don’t freak out! This doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re a psychopath.
