Gen Z Workers Struggle with Email Stress, Survey Finds

A recent survey reveals that email stress is disproportionately affecting Gen Z workers, with many feeling overwhelmed by the volume of messages they receive daily. Conducted by Babbel, a language learning platform, the survey of 2,000 U.S. office workers highlights the challenges faced by the youngest members of the workforce.

Gen Z Faces Email Stress

Key findings from the survey include:

  • Email Overload: A majority of respondents report feeling stressed by the volume of work emails they receive each day. However, Gen Z workers aged 18 to 24 are particularly impacted, with 36% admitting to having over 1,000 unread emails in their inbox.
  • Regrettable Emails: Gen Z professionals are more likely than other age groups to express regret over emails they send, with 1 in 5 stating they โ€œvery oftenโ€ regret their email communications.

Esteban Touma, a linguistics and culture expert at Babbel, attributes these challenges to differences in communication preferences influenced by the prevalence of instant messaging platforms and social media among Gen Z. The structured and formal nature of email communication may feel unfamiliar and complicated to many in this demographic.

The mismatch in communication styles can contribute to burnout and impact employee engagement, as illustrated by the experience of Keely Antonio, 25, who felt overwhelmed by communication challenges at her first corporate job. Antonio emphasizes the need for streamlined and supportive communication channels in the workplace, advocating for tools that facilitate real-time feedback and support.

Touma underscores the importance of workplace leaders in setting and communicating expectations around email response times, especially for younger workers who may struggle to establish boundaries. He recommends strategies such as setting up filters to prioritize urgent emails and establishing specific times for checking and responding to messages to mitigate email-related stress and maintain work-life balance.
