This is a difficult pill to swallow, yetย it can also offer some relief. You are not enough because you shouldnโ€™t be. Your loved oneโ€™s recovery shouldnโ€™t rest entirely on your shoulders. Seek out support structures for your loved one so that you arenโ€™t the only lifeline. Support structures can be anything: faith community, support groups, clubs, online gamer affiliations, depression forums, friends, family members, treatment groups, and mental health professionals.

Taking care of or living with someone who is suffering from depression can be emotionally taxing. It is not selfish for you to take care of yourself. There is an appropriate level of emotional distance that is healthy for your well-being and for your loved one.

  • Sleep disturbances, includingย insomniaย orย sleepingย too much
  • Tiredness and lack of energy, so that even small tasks take extra effort
  • Changes inย appetiteย such asย reduced appetite and weight loss, or increased cravings for food and weight gain
  • Anxiety, agitation, or restlessness
  • Slowed thinking, speaking, or body movements
  • Feelings of worthlessness orย guilt, fixating on past failures, or blaming yourself for things that arenโ€™t your responsibility
  • Trouble thinking, concentrating, making decisions, and remembering things
  • Frequent or recurrent thoughts of death,ย suicidalย thoughts, or suicide attempts
