In a recent survey conducted by OnePoll on behalf of Cornbread Hemp, the sleep habits of 2,000 U.S. adults have been unveiled, shedding light on the elusive quest for the perfect night’s sleep. Published on January 9, 2024, the findings expose the challenges Americans face in achieving restful nights and the impact of stress and sleep struggles.
Perfect Sleep Eludes Americans
According to the research, the average American experiences the coveted “perfect” night’s sleep a mere 132 times a year. However, they manage an additional 120 nights of what they consider “good” sleep. This leaves 113 nights fraught with difficulties, labeled as “bad” sleep or characterized by staying awake throughout the night.
Stress and Anxiety Leads To Sleep Struggles
The survey delves into the factors contributing to sleep challenges, revealing that stress and anxiety play a significant role. Respondents reported going to bed feeling stressed or anxious three days a week, with this emotional burden extending beyond bedtime. Stress is so pervasive that it keeps individuals awake for an additional three hours after their intended bedtime.
Unfortunately, staying awake for this extended period marks the threshold for anticipating a negative impact on the following day. Nearly two-thirds (65%) of respondents agree that a poor night’s sleep is sufficient to ruin the day ahead.
Coping Mechanisms and Sleep Aids
To cope with stress, respondents resort to various activities, with 59% checking their phones, 49% indulging in snacks, and 39% staring at the ceiling instead of sleeping. Concerns about physical health (58%), upcoming tasks (56%), and mental health (51%) dominate the list of stressors.
Despite the array of sleep aids and relaxation methods attempted by respondents, only 28% found their most frequently used method to be “very effective.” From reading (44%) and warm milk (42%) to CBD (37%) and melatonin (29%), individuals continue to seek solutions for a restful night’s sleep.
Impact of Stress on Daily Life
The survey highlights the profound impact of stress on daily life. Respondents reported experiencing an average of four panic attacks per year, leading to missed work (43%), family meals (41%), weddings (40%), and birthday parties (39%). Stress even resulted in missing holiday gatherings (31%), concerts (20%), and significant events in their children’s lives (11%).
Throughout 2023, Americans missed an average of nine different events due to stress and anxiety, underscoring the pervasive nature of these challenges.
Coping Strategies for Stress
When dealing with stress, respondents adopt various coping mechanisms. Meditation (50%), therapy or counseling (43%), and CBD usage (40%) are among the popular choices. Retail therapy, both online (32%) and in stores (22%), provides solace for some, while others turn to productive activities such as exercise (31%) and cleaning (17%).
Sacrifices for Perfect Sleep
In a hypothetical scenario where respondents could enjoy a “perfect” night’s sleep every day for a year, free from stress, they are willing to make significant sacrifices. Nearly half (48%) would give up their WiFi, 43% their bed, and 41% their indoor plumbing for the prospect of uninterrupted, stress-free sleep.
Eric Zipperle, CEO of Cornbread Hemp, commented on the findings, emphasizing the importance of natural, healthy coping mechanisms. He suggested that plant-based alternatives made from cannabis, with up to 2 mg of THC per serving, could offer relief and contribute to a restful night’s sleep.
The survey results reflect the intricate relationship between stress, sleep quality, and individuals’ attempts to navigate these challenges, providing valuable insights into the complex world of American sleep patterns in 2024.
