How To Apologize? 5 Best Steps To A Real Apology

More Than Im Sorry 1

Sometimes, saying magic words like โ€œIโ€™m sorryโ€ isnโ€™t enough. So how to apologize in a meaningful manner? Well, they say that the best apology is changed behavior and below are the steps on how you can achieve it.

Most of us donโ€™t know how to make a real apology.ย  Thatโ€™s not surprising, because most of us have been taught from early childhood how to give fake apologies.

You probably first learned how to give an apology when you were playing in the sandbox.ย  You bonked the kid next to you on the head with your plastic shovel, and instantly a nearby parent would tell you to โ€œsay youโ€™re sorryโ€.ย  Kids quickly learn that all they have to do is utter the magic words and all would be forgiven.ย  Then you could get back to playing, and if youโ€™re lucky you might even get a juice box.

Just saying โ€œIโ€™m sorryโ€ isnโ€™t enough.ย

When you are older, and begin to have serious relationships (work, friend, family, or intimate), you canโ€™t help but sometimes hurt the people youโ€™re closest to.ย  Itโ€™s unavoidable.ย  My wife and Iโ€™ve been together for 41 years, we get along incredibly well, and yet we still occasionally say or do things that hurt the otherโ€™s feelings.ย  We canโ€™t help it, weโ€™re human.ย  But weโ€™ve learned, through hard experience, that a real apology goes a long way to repairing an injury.

how to apologize

As adults, we discover that the magic words arenโ€™t helpful anymore; even when you regret your actions with all your heart.ย  In fact, instead of making things better, saying youโ€™re sorry sometimes seems to make everything even worse.

The goal of the apology is NOT to get out of trouble or have the other person stop being angry at you.ย  The goal is to mend a rift in your relationship.ย  Itโ€™s as if the fabric of your relationship has been torn, and you are trying to sew it back together.ย  To make the repair, you have to craft an apology that is both authentic to you and meaningful to the other person.ย  Itโ€™s not enough just to show that youโ€™re sincere when you apologize. The goal is to help mend the rift.

How To Apologize? 5 Steps To A Meaningful Apology

how to apologize

With my Couples Therapy clients, I stress that a meaningful apology has several parts, and each part is important in helping to heal the damage.ย  Here are what I believe are the key steps to an effective apology.ย  But apologies are hard, so Iโ€™ve also included the ways that people often unconsciously undermine their apology.

1. I was wrong

You start with a very clear admission that you made a mistake.ย  This is a critical first step that shows you understand that what you did was wrong.

How people undermine this step:ย  They try to justify their actions.ย  They say something like โ€œI didnโ€™t really mean itโ€, โ€œI said that because of what you didโ€, or โ€œI was still angry over our last fightโ€.ย  All these statements tell your partner โ€œIt wasnโ€™t my faultโ€.ย  And when you start an apology by saying itโ€™s not your fault, itโ€™s no longer an apology.

2. I see that I hurt you

Let them know that you see that your actions hurt them and that you donโ€™t blame them for being upset.

How people undermine this step:ย  Itโ€™s very painful when you hurt your partner, so people naturally try to minimize the impact of what theyโ€™ve done.ย  People say things like โ€œYouโ€™re overreactingโ€ or โ€œIt wasnโ€™t that badโ€ or โ€œYour too sensitiveโ€.

These are just ways people try and shift some of the blame to the partner.ย  It is essentially saying โ€œitโ€™s your own fault for feeling hurtโ€.

3.ย I understand how you feel

Showing empathy for your partner is an important part of any apology.ย  You show empathy by demonstrating that you can see things through their eyes and connect with how they feel hurt.

How people undermine this step: ย ย People argue about how their partner is interpreting what happened.ย  Instead of trying to see it through their eyes, they try to convince their partner that theyโ€™re wrong.

They say things like โ€œYou shouldnโ€™t feel like thatโ€, โ€œI wasnโ€™t trying to hurt youโ€, or โ€œYou always twist things aroundโ€.ย  Again, this is telling them theyโ€™re wrong to be upset.ย  Not a good strategy.

4. I feel _______ (fill in the blank).ย

Along with showing that you understand how they feel, you need to communicate the pain that you experience when you see the hurt that youโ€™ve caused them. For example, โ€œI feel horrible when I see the pain that Iโ€™ve caused youโ€.

how to apologize

How people undermine this step: 1. They make it about their pain and take the focus off the injured partner.ย  2. They turn it into a play for sympathy from their partner.ย 3. They blame their partner for โ€œmaking them feel badโ€.

5.ย I wonโ€™t do it again

Make it clear that youโ€™ve learned from this experience and that you are making a committed effort to not repeat your behavior.ย  You donโ€™t have to be perfect, but you have to make it clear that youโ€™re really trying to change.

How people undermine this step:ย  People make empty promises just as a way of appeasing their partner.ย  But they donโ€™t really make a sincere effort to change. Then, when they repeat the same action, the damage is much worse because now the partner is dealing with the pain of what happened and a feeling of betrayal.ย  They feel like they must not be very important if their partner wonโ€™t even try to change.

how to apologize

A real apology creates a feeling of safety

Itโ€™s important to remember that your apology is an effort to restore your partnerโ€™s feeling of safety and trust in the relationship.ย  When you hurt your partner, it makes him/her feel like itโ€™s not safe to be with you.ย  The apology is your effort to prove that you can and will take care of them. You are telling them that itโ€™s important to you that they are safe.

Signs Of An Untrustworthy Person

You have been burned far too many times and now find it hard to trust someone? The worst part about this is that it is always the closet ones, which is why it is so easy to overlook the signs of untrustworthy people.

Many of us tend to see the best in others, which often leads to disappointment. The more naive, open-hearted parts of us want to give people the benefit of the doubt, handing out trust like candy before theyโ€™ve earned it. When those same people betray that trust, it leaves us feeling confused and hurt, especially when they didnโ€™t deserve the trust we gave them in the first place.

But just because youโ€™ve been hurt before doesnโ€™t mean you should stop trusting altogether. Instead, use those experiences as lessons to help you identify who you shouldnโ€™t trust. If those lessons havenโ€™t been enough, keep reading to learn the warning sign
