Brutal Truths That Sigmund Freud Told Us About Life

sigmund freud 2

Sigmund Freudย was an Austrian neurologist, now known as the father of psychoanalysis.ย He explored the human mind more vastly than any other before him.

His contributions to psychology are extensive. He struggled with the truths of human beings and existence for all his life, which is why everything he said is of great value. Freud was one of the most influential people of the twentieth century and his enduring legacy has influenced not only psychology, but art, literature and even the way people bring up their children.

In his words,
โ€œThe masses have never thirsted after truth. They demand illusions, and cannot do without them. They constantly give what is unreal precedence over what is real; they are almost as strongly influenced by what is untrue as by what is true. They have an evident tendency not to distinguish by the two.โ€ -Sigmund Freud

Here are moreย of lifeโ€™s awful brutal truths by Sigmund Freud:

1. The goal of all life is death.

A person who is aware of this would not avoid any acts of courage. Thatโ€™s why the biggest truth of all life is death.

2. There are two major factors protecting human health: to love oneโ€™s job and to love oneโ€™s life.

Itโ€™s not that we are not going to live at all, just because we are going to die. If we assume that we are living already, that means we are going to die. We can love the flowers, the trees, the rain and the smell of the soil after rain. There are, of course, things to be loved in life. We should not think that the glass is half empty. Neither should we think that it is half full. We should see the glass as it is. Your job can make or break your life. And the pain of working at a job that you hate is worse than the pain of hitting your little toe! Because the pain of the latter lasts a few minutes while that of the former lasts for life.

3. Our weaknesses are our power.

The only way that our enemies take us down is by targeting our weaknesses. If a person accepts his own flaws and embraces them, there is nothing that others can use against him or her. We can make ourselves powerful by accepting that we do have our own weaknesses. Nietzsche points at a similar truth of life when says โ€ Our dilemmas are our hopes.โ€

4. There is no such thing as love, there is only libido.

Iโ€™m not saying it. A neurologist, psychologist, scientist, philosopher, psychiatrist and psychoanalyst with years of experience is. I think he is telling the truth, or at least this is my observation. Or I have only met people who made this a driving principle in life. So, maybe we can accept this as a reality of life and be less upset.

5. People are more intelligent than they can imagine and they are unimaginably immoral.

There are always two paths in life. Whichever path you chose, it is not wise to criticize someone who has taken the other one. Only a person lacking morals can do this.

6. Dreams are the royal roads to the unconscious.

Another key aspect regarding humans is the unconscious. I believe that dreaming is necessary for self-discovery, and I advise you to care for dreaming as much as you do for sleeping. I do not have a single nightโ€™s sleep without a dream. I am always devastated to remember the fact that the dreams that I have, which can make up the scenario of at least a short movie, last only 11 seconds โ€œat most.โ€

7. A neurosis is having no tolerance for uncertainty.

There is no such painful and satisfying emotion as the one you feel towards ambiguity. But this, of course, can affect everyone differently.

8. People can defend themselves against attacks, but they are vulnerable to compliments.

Most of us cannot tolerate criticism, so we try and find weaknesses of those criticizing us to hurt themย

9. One needs to turn a maze into a razor straight line to understand women.
Actually, this is not a fact. Maybe the problem is that men are so predictable.

10. Iโ€™ve always sought for power and confidence outside. But these two are always inherent. And they are always there for us to find them.

Self-confidence is trusting your โ€œself.โ€ These are the key elements that everyone needs to have, as long as they do not contribute to egoism. Everything is in our hands, and this has always been the case. We have always thought the way we wanted to, we have always heard as much as we wanted to hear, and we have always seen as much as we wanted to see.

The glass had to be half full or half empty for us. We havenโ€™t been able to accept things as they are. We did not understand what we were told. And yet, we got upset every time. The reason for that was lack of confidence, because if we believed in ourselves and the power that we possess, we would understand as we were told and see as we were shown.
