A consistent theme of adult psychotherapy clients is that they had parents who were not curious about who they were but, instead, told them who they should be. The child creates a โpersonaโ for her parents but doesnโt learn to know herself. ย What happens is that โthe authentic selfโโ the part of us open to feelings, experiences, and intimacyโ remains underdeveloped. ย
