The magic of firsts.
When was the last time you did something for the first time?
When I asked this question to a friend of mine, his brow immediately furrowed in contemplation. After a brief pause, having struggled to come up with an answer, he finally responded. โWell, I guess not for a while, but I think thatโs to be expected. I mean, you only get so many firsts. I feel like you just run out after a while.โ
If you ask me, though, nothing could be further from the truth. If you choose to see them, firsts are everywhere. Your first conversation with the new barista at your favourite coffee shop, for instance. Or your first time reading a book by an unfamiliar author. Or your first dinner at that new restaurant.
When we stop seeking out firsts, itโs easy to feel as though our lives are monotonous and boring. But if you choose to notice all of the many firsts that we are all continuously experiencing, each day suddenly becomes an adventure.
Thereโs something magical about firsts that I think is incredibly worthwhile, and itโs something that shouldnโt be taken lightly. Do your best, then, to aim for just one first this week. It doesnโt have to be very big, and it probably wonโt be, but that doesnโt make it any less significant. After all, it is often the smallest moments that carry the most weight.
