Bobi world’s oldest dog and a Guinness World Record holder, sadly passed away at the remarkable age of 31, leaving pet lovers in mourning.
Bobi World’s Oldest Dog Dies At 31
Dr. Karen Becker, a veterinarian who had the privilege of meeting Bobi on several occasions, confirmed his peaceful departure in a heartfelt Facebook post. She acknowledged that despite living longer than any dog in history, Bobi’s 11,478 days on Earth were never enough for those who adored him. Bobi’s enduring legacy will be cherished for years to come.
Born on May 11, 1992, Bobi, a purebred Rafeiro do Alentejo, called Conqueiros, Portugal, his lifelong home. His longevity was officially recognized by Guinness World Records on February 2, 2023, when he was celebrated as the world’s oldest living and oldest-ever canine. This distinction was made all the more extraordinary considering that the average lifespan of a dog is 10 to 13 years.
Bobi’s advanced age was authenticated by multiple sources, including the Veterinary Medical Service of the Municipality of Leiria, which first registered him in 1992, and Portugal’s national union of veterinarians’ pet database, SIAC. He surpassed the previous record set by an Australian cattle dog named Bluey, who lived to be 29 years and five months old before passing away in 1939.
This resilient dog’s life journey spanned significant historical events, including the World Trade Center attacks in 1993 and on September 11, 2001, as well as six U.S. presidencies and the ascent of King Charles III to the British throne.
Bobi’s life could have taken a different turn as he was left behind in a woodpile when his family decided not to keep his littermates due to an abundance of animals. However, he was discovered by Leonel Costa and his brother, who kept his existence hidden from their parents.
Bobi’s unique story of survival and longevity was attributed to factors like good nutrition, constant exposure to nature, the freedom to explore his surroundings, consistent veterinary care, and an abundance of love. He never spent a day tied up or leashed and enjoyed a diet of exclusively human food.
Bobi’s extraordinary genes might have played a role in his longevity as his mother lived to be 18, and another family dog, Chicote, reached the ripe old age of 22. Leonel Costa, Bobi’s proud owner, described him as “one of a kind,” expressing gratitude for the 30 years they had together and the warrior-like spirit that allowed Bobi to defy the odds of a dog’s typical.
