How to Make a Long-Distance Relationship Work

Long-distance relationships are never easy, but neither is any relationship. As with any commitment, you must make the effort to make it work and we’ll go over the things that can ensure it lasts.

The tragic end of a long-distance relationship is a tale as old as time and the cliché warning that they never last come attached to it at every turn. However, that scenario doesn’t have to come to fruition if you know how to play your cards right. It is not easy, and there will be times when you want to throw in the towel, but no relationship is ever easy. With long-distance relationships, you simply have another factor that adds strain onto your relationship, but if you can handle it well, then there is no reason to have it end your partnership with someone.

Common Issues Surrounding Long-Distance Relationships

If you are aware of the key issues that could kickstart the breakdown of your long-distance relationship, then you will be able to actively work to prevent them from becoming issues or be able to deal with them in the right way.

1) Trust

Whether you were dating before it became long-distance or your relationship has always been that way, being able to trust someone to that extent can be challenging. As you don’t see them as often and they are leading a completely different life to you, it can be daunting to put your faith completely in someone.

2) Time Together

Naturally, in a long-distance relationship, you’re going to have less time together. Whether it is time zone difference, or your lives just don’t seem to match-up, there are going to be plenty of moments when you’re rarely able to talk with one another.

3) Loneliness

Being in a long-distance relationship can feel incredibly lonely, especially if you don’t have an active social life. Feeling this way tends to lead to arguments and issues because of the way you inherently feel about your current situation.

How to Combat Long-Distance Dating Issues

Although it seems challenging, there are ways that you can combat these issues and make a long-distance relationship work.

1) Communication

You must up your game when it comes to communication because it is vital to making a long-distance relationship work. Effective communication isn’t just about talking all the time either, you need to be able to learn how you sound to someone who can’t hear your voice or see you. You need to learn to be careful about your word selection and how you approach issues in the relationship.

2) Setting Aside Time

Setting-up an agreed-upon time to chat when you have no other commitments and can focus your attention solely on your partner will help keep the lines of communication open and help you feel that you’re both working on the relationship despite the distance.

3) Honesty

You need to be honest about how you’re feeling because you’ll be surprised by how much someone can pick-up from a simple message. Tone and emotion can be conveyed in a message more than you think – which is why flirty dating websites can work so well for singles – so you need to be able, to be honest with your partner otherwise they will worry, and the lines of communication will break down.

As with any relationship, there is no magic formula for making it work, however, it does depend on both of you being understanding and making the effort to make it work. Through time, honesty and dedication to one another, you can form a marvelous relationship that rivals any short-distance relationship around.
