Gen Z’s Silent Walking: A New Movement in Mindfulness

 /

Gen Z is making waves yet again with their latest trend, “silent walking,” which involves going for a walk without any technological distractions such as phones, music, or podcasts.

What Is ‘Silent Walking Trend’ Exactly?

This movement gained significant attention after podcaster Mady Maio unintentionally kick-started it with a viral video. Maio attested to the life-changing benefits of silent walking, emphasizing that it allowed her to hear her own thoughts and tap into her intuition.

The term “silent walking” was originally coined by New York City influencer Arielle Lorre back in January, who shared her experiences and the grounding effect it had on her senses through her podcast.

Since then, thousands of Gen Z individuals have ditched the “hot girl walk” trend, which emerged during lockdown, in favor of silent walking and have been sharing their experiences on TikTok.

However, this new trend has left some people bemused, as they see it as merely walking without technology, something that has been around for centuries. They wonder why Gen Z is so captivated by this seemingly straightforward activity and even humorously suggest it’s akin to “discovering thinking.”

Nonetheless, the buzz around silent walking highlights a broader societal trend—the excessive dependence on smartphones. Multiple studies have pointed out the health benefits of spending time in nature while simultaneously highlighting the detrimental effects of prolonged smartphone use. In fact, the NSW government has gone so far as to ban phones in public high schools to prevent students from falling behind in their studies and reduce the risk of accidents caused by distracted pedestrians.

In sum, Gen Z’s “silent walking” trend, though seemingly simple, underscores a deeper issue of smartphone dependency and highlights the value of disconnection from technology for mental clarity and overall well-being.
