Experts Warns Dark Circles Under Eyes Could Signal Health Problems

Dark circles under the eyes have long been considered a cosmetic concern, but experts now warn that they could indicate underlying health issues. Dermatologists suggest that these dark circles should not be overlooked, as they might signify more than just a lack of sleep.

According to Dr. Deepali Bhardwaj, deficiencies in essential vitamins such as D, K, and E, along with certain B vitamins, could be contributing factors to dark circles. She advises individuals to check their vitamin levels and consider supplements if necessary.

Furthermore, Dr. Shareefa Chause of Shareefaโ€™s Skin Care Clinic highlights various other factors that could affect the delicate skin around the eyes, including poor sleep quality, allergies, dehydration, and even conditions like iron deficiency or anemia. Dr. Chause emphasizes that persistent dark circles warrant medical attention, as they could be linked to thyroid disorders or kidney problems.

Dark Circles And Genetic Predisposition

Genetics also plays a significant role, notes Dr. Bhardwaj. If dark circles appear early in life, itโ€™s likely due to genetic predisposition, making treatment more challenging. Additionally, dark circles tend to worsen with age due to the natural aging process, including skin thinning and loss of fat and collagen.

While lack of sleep is a contributing factor, other underlying medical conditions such as low hemoglobin, frequent eye rubbing, and skin disorders like eczema can exacerbate dark circles. Dr. Bhardwaj advises lifestyle changes, including a nutritious diet, adequate sleep, and stress management, to improve dark circles.

However, she warns against investing in over-the-counter eye creams, as they often prove ineffective. Instead, Dr. Bhardwaj recommends ingredients such as vitamin K, azelaic acid, and retinol, along with regular sunscreen application for maintaining healthy skin around the eyes.

Dr. Chause suggests incorporating massaging techniques to reduce fluid retention and improve circulation, which can help diminish the appearance of dark circles over time. Additionally, she recommends including magnesium-rich foods like almonds, spinach, and avocados in oneโ€™s diet to promote skin health.

In conclusion, while dark circles may seem like a cosmetic concern, they could indicate underlying health issues that require attention. Consulting a dermatologist for proper diagnosis and treatment is crucial for addressing the root cause and improving the appearance of dark circles.
