Are Bad Friends Holding You Back? The Friend Test To Help You Understand

Friends always add to your life, but the catch is who is adding what exactly? Good friends add a lot of fun, and happiness, whereas bad friends end up adding toxicity. Whenever you feel like you are not being able to distinguish between the good and the bad, put them to the friend test. They might not know what is happening, but you will surely know who deserves a place in your life, and who doesnโ€™t.

Recently, I met up with my roommate from college. Like many old friends, we share a secret language, referring to events and situations with a single word or glance. A raised eyebrow, a sideways look, the phrase, โ€œWhat size are your bananas?โ€ and we erupt into fits of laughter while others look on perplexed.

I feel invigorated whenever we meet; communication is effortless and enlivening. Which got me thinking: Why canโ€™t all my friendships be like this?

The Friends You Choose

Itโ€™s a long-held belief by psychotherapists that the friends you choose reflect your innermost feelings about yourself. For example, if you donโ€™t value yourself, your friends wonโ€™t either. They wonโ€™t think twice about standing you up, phoning in last-minute cancellations, or forgetting about you entirely. They donโ€™t consider your feelings or needs. But donโ€™t blame them, they just mirror your low opinion of yourself.

Whatโ€™s more, if youโ€™re self-critical or disparaging, expect unsolicited advice, criticism,ย and discouraging comments. When it comes to friendships, you get what you believe youโ€™re worth.

Why You Put Up with Lame Friends

As long as personal insecurities dominate you so will unhealthy friendships. The more insecure you are, the more you tolerate bogusย friendships.

Three reasons you may think poor treatment from friends is acceptable:

1. Low Self-Esteem:ย You excuse your friendsโ€™ lackluster behavior because you donโ€™t think that you deserve better.

2. Fear of Loneliness: You harbor fears of abandonment and isolation, so you accept your friendsโ€™ shoddy conduct.

3. Being a Caretaker:ย You tend to service others and neglect yourself; caring for others is the only way you feel valued.

The Friend Test

If you repeatedly leave an encounter with a friend feeling discouraged, itโ€™s time to ask,ย โ€œWhy am I still friends with this person?โ€

Try this simple test: After you meet with a friend, take a quick emotionally inventory. Ask yourself:

โ€“Do I feel lighter?

-Am I encouraged?

-Do I feel valued?

If you answered yes to all three questions, that friend is a keeper. If you donโ€™t, try it again. Keep in mind that even good friends have bad days or make mistakes; itโ€™s okay to give them a pass now and then.

But if a friend consistently leaves you disheartened, disappointed, or depressed, they failed the good friend test. It may be time to move on.

Friends that Grow Together, Stay Together

No one likes the idea of a jettisoned friendship, particularly if itโ€™s an old friend. Yet, sometimes friendships expire. Priorities transform as you mature. You may no longer be compatible. For instance, a new dad may quickly find that he has little in common with his high school drinking buddies.

Only when friends evolve and grow together do friendships withstand the test of time. A true friend is a constant source of inspiration, someone that you can always turn to for support, someone who will champion you in a heartbeat.

So if your friends often leave you feeling unappreciated and neglected, put them to the test. Challenging your friends is not a crime, but staying in unhealthy relationships certainly should be.

Just like a toxic relationship can suck all the energy and positivity out from your life, a toxic friendship can do the same. The sooner you realize who arenโ€™t your genuine friends, and are exploiting you for their own gains, the sooner you will be able to kick them out of your life. Focus on having good, genuine friendships, and you will see how amazing it feels to have them in your life.
