Get Fit on Your Schedule: Gym On Weekends May Be Protecting Your Heart Health

Heard the latest? A new study suggests that hitting the gym on weekends might be just as good for your heart as working out all week. Letโ€™s dive in!

Gym On Weekends May Be Protecting Your Heart Health

A recent study published in the journal JAMA suggests that weekend-only workouts may have similar benefits for heart health as regular exercise throughout the week. The research, based on data from the UK Biobank, analyzed over 100,000 participants who wore accelerometers to track their physical activity.

The study found that both consistent weekly exercise and condensed weekend workouts were associated with reductions in the risk of heart attack, heart failure, atrial fibrillation, and stroke.

While the studyโ€™s population was predominantly White, and participants wore accelerometers for only a week, it offers hope to those who find it challenging to exercise daily.

Dr. Andrew Freeman, a preventive cardiologist at National Jewish Health in Denver, recommends daily exercise but acknowledges that some individuals can only dedicate time on the weekends. He advises aiming for at least 150 minutes of brisk activity per week, emphasizing that โ€œany activity is better than none.โ€

The study suggests that itโ€™s essential to find a physical activity that one enjoys, whether itโ€™s running, swimming, dancing, or even walking, as consistency and enjoyment play crucial roles in maintaining a fitness routine. Dr. Freeman encourages people to prioritize exercise in the morning to avoid potential sleep disruptions.

In the end, the key takeaway is that regular physical activity, even if concentrated on the weekend, can contribute to better heart health. The next challenge for researchers is determining the minimum duration of each exercise session required for maximum benefits.

Ultimately, maintaining a healthy lifestyle involves exercise, sufficient sleep, a plant-based diet, stress management, and socialization to mitigate health risks and enjoy a fulfilling life.
