At the age of 17, Prof. Hankir returned to the UK with his twin brother, harboring aspirations of pursuing a career in medicine. However, his dreams were dashed when he realized that his qualifications obtained in Lebanon did not meet the standards for admission to a UK university.
Additionally, the financial burden of international student status made pursuing higher education seem insurmountable.
Facing these challenges, Prof. Hankir found himself working odd jobs, including serving at a kebab van and working as a janitor and shelf-stacker, to make ends meet. Despite his relentless work ethic, he encountered further adversity when he witnessed a homicide while working at the kebab van, amplifying his sense of disillusionment and despair.
