4 Common Mistakes While Brushing Teeth Revealed by A Dentist

Maintaining dental hygiene is crucial for a healthy smile, but there are common mistakes while brushing teeth. Weโ€™ll explore four significant errors highlighted by Dr. Praveen Sharma, a UK-based dentist and scientific adviser to the British Dental Association.

Are you ready to delve into these dental blunders? They offer a comprehensive understanding of how to safeguard your oral well-being for a lasting, brilliant smile.

4 Mistakes While Brushing Teeth

1. Using Mouthwash Immediately After Brushing

The first mistake he pointed out is the habit of using mouthwash right after brushing, which, according to him, can diminish the benefits of fluoride in toothpaste.

Dr. Sharma recommends not rinsing immediately after brushing to preserve the fluorideโ€™s effects, suggesting waiting for a substantial amount of time before using mouthwash, preferably at a different time than brushing.

2. Brushing Too Soon After Eating

Dr. Sharmaโ€™s second piece of advice revolves around the timing of brushing after meals. He advises waiting at least 30 minutes before cleaning the teeth after eating or drinking.

This pause allows the mouth to naturally cleanse itself and allows the tooth surfaces to reset. Rushing to brush immediately after consuming acidic foods and drinks can potentially harm the enamel layer on teeth, increasing the risk of erosion and tooth decay.

3. Overlooking Interdental Brushes and Dental Floss

The third common mistake Dr. Sharma addresses is neglecting interdental brushes and dental floss. He emphasizes the importance of using interdental brushes, which are small bristled heads designed to clean hidden food particles and plaque between teeth.

Dr. Sharma recommends incorporating interdental brushing into daily oral care routines, preferably before traditional brushing. If the spaces between teeth are too tight for interdental brushes, dental floss can be used as an alternative.

Proper technique, such as angling the bristles toward the gum line and employing a circular motion, is essential to protect teeth and gums.

4. Forgetting to Brush Before Bed

The fourth and final mistake highlighted by Dr. Sharma is neglecting to brush teeth before bedtime. He stresses the importance of brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste for at least two minutes, with special emphasis on brushing before going to bed.

This nighttime routine is crucial because saliva production decreases during sleep, and saliva helps remove bacteria that can lead to tooth decay.

According to recent surveys, a significant portion of the population seems to be recognizing the importance of good oral hygiene, with a majority of Americans brushing their teeth at least twice daily in 2023.
